Personal Narrative-How Coach Mom Changed My Life

Improved Essays
We sat on the cold, dusty floor of the gym on that icy January day. Coach Nancy’s voice lulled us into a trance so deep, we almost ignored her as she divulged the names of the girls who had made the team. Startled, we sat up. She called out my name and cemented my fate. I was 13 when I sat on that grimy gym floor, sweat dripping down my back. Looking back to that life-changing moment, I’ve learned that hard work and a good attitude will pay off in the end.
I had tried out for the seventh-grade volleyball team on a whim, assuming that I would make it because I could beat the odds(I was delusional ). There was only one problem, I had never played volleyball as a real team before and was learning as I went. Other girls had played private leagues

Mom was small, a slight 110 pounds but through my eyes, she was large, even after my height surpassed hers. To this day, she would argue that she weighed only 100. Her strong presence claimed her space, and anyone else's that she cared to. Being right was of utmost importance to her, and she made sure always to have the last word. Overbearing, and overprotective of me, her only child, she usually controlled every situation, regardless of how trivial.…

I walked into Neil Armstrong Middle School's gym, nervous as can be, not ready for basketball tryouts. The only reason I was there was because my dad and sister wanted me to play. I also wanted to play a sport this year, but I didn't think it would be basketball. It was so loud it sounded like someone was yelling in my ear and playing music at the same time. We started doing lay-up drills, I missed so many compared to the other girls.…

I didn’t make it. Disappointment surged through my body, but determination quickly squashed that feeling. Looking at the roster in the courts, I couldn’t find my name. I don’t know why I had such high hopes that I'd make the team, seeing how I was new to both high school and the sport. However, I knew I shouldn’t give up, and that I will eventually make the team.…

My freshman year of high school I went out for softball. I had loved softball when I was younger and had always been the star of the team. I wasn’t expecting to come in and be a hot shot, but I also wasn’t expecting to be the bottom man of the totem pole. We had a large team and the coaches knew that to get everyone playing time they would need to have some of us suit up for the first game and save others for a different game that would be easier. I was thrilled when coach said my name in the list of those suiting up for the first game regardless it was for the junior varsity team.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

It was the beginning of my 8th-grade summer vacation. Hooray! No more waking up early, and no more late nights doing homework. As the days went by, I knew I couldn’t sleep in until noon, or stay up very late, I needed to go to as many volleyball activities the school offered so I could make it on a good team. I was determined to do anything to become a 10x better athlete than I was last year because it was high school ball, not middle school ball.…

Before I even graduated high school, I remember in middle school I made friends during gym class from just wanting to play volleyball with other students who also wanted to.…
