Personal Narrative: How Cancer Has Changed My Life

Superior Essays
Cancer, that word rang through my mind like a song that had been set on repeat. We found out the news a few days after Christmas that my grandfather had stage four pancreatic cancer and had a limited amount of time left. He seemed perfectly fine prior to the news when he went in for a checkup with his doctor. My grandfather had previous health issues most involving his heart, but cancer was the one thing my family never expected. The night I found out my grandfather had stage four cancer is a night I will never forget, and it changed my life but not for the better. The news had hit me like a ton of bricks and was so unexpected that all of this was happening. I remember feeling hateful at the world wondering why did bad things like this happen to good people. At the same time I felt completely and utterly broken inside and was scared of what would happen next. Most of all I never thought that something like this would have happened to me. Recalling that night I cried myself to sleep worried that he may not be there when I woke up the next morning. The bond that me and my grandfather had everyone could see that and they knew there was no taking us apart. We were like those two kids that meet on their first day of Kindergarten and you knew that they would be friends from …show more content…
Don’t take the time you have with your loved ones for granted, because before you know it they may not be with you anymore. It took me also a long time to realize this and also find out how to be happy again. I felt lost for the longest time but I eventually came to the realization that my grandfather wouldn’t have wanted me to always be sad he wanted me to move on with my life. I channeled the sadness that I had into helping others which eventually made me happy again, and who I am today. The lesson I want to leave throughout my story is that even in the darkest of times there is a light at the

The most challenging leadership role I have undertaken is being President of the Sutherland Cancer Awareness Club. This is my first year as President and the Club has created a goal of raising $2,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. I think this is achievable but will require a large amount of effort from each of the club's 55 members. The main difficulty is two-way communication with some members, particularly the younger students who are new to responsibility and don't always fulfil their commitments. I try to be a patient mentor and highlight the importance of persistent and consistent effort in achieving our goal.…

My parents have often jokingly called me the “Queen of Google.” Any time I ask a question that they can’t answer, I’ll immediately pull out my phone and research it until I find an answer that satisfies me. I love looking into a subject in depth and taking pages of notes on it, then formulating it into a cohesive paper that imparts the knowledge I have collected on it. This has led me to want a career in research; however, it wasn’t until my mother’s diagnosis with cancer that I was able to narrow my focus to the kind of research that I wanted to do. Watching how it has totally changed her life and the hopelessness of knowing that no medication can fully stop it, not even chemotherapy, has led me to an interest in cancer research.…

There are approximately 397,000 children in foster care in the United States of America currently and I used to be one of them. However, foster had not even been near the forefront of my mind that summer. The summer before I started my first year of high school, I had plenty of anxiety about the tall tale I invented in my own mind that stood before me. Stories about how hard high school were numerous and often regaled on the crowded bus ride home by high schoolers who seemed to have the knowledge of every wise teacher in history combined. which that scared me to death; I had always held my position as a good student who followed the rules of my middle school.…

" I choose to die rather than receiving this painful chemotherapy or radiation therapy? " These are words of my one of the close relatives who was healthy and happy before he started showing symptoms of deadly cancer(last stage). His family was trying their hard to keep the head of their family alive and happy by providing better treatments, consulting the doctor, buying expensive medicine and taking care. I saw his family shedding their tears and praying to God every day. Those treatments are expensive, harsh, risky, and have many side effects.…

It was in the darkened corridor of the University Hospital during the early hours of the morning while sitting at a card table putting together pieces of a puzzle, my life felt as if it was coming off the rails. Figuratively and literally, these puzzle pieces represented myself sorting out memories, thoughts, questions, and struggling to understand what the loss of one of the most significant figures of my upbringing will look like without his guidance and love. “Your grandfather has cancer.” In the not so distant past the same words echoed with my mother’s diagnoses and once again being confronted with this undesirable announcement has me shaken. The element of pain that must be endured when one first hears that a family member has cancer…

A few years ago my family faced one of the most tragic events life had thrown at us. My stepfather was diagnosed with Terminal Brain Cancer after he had unexpectedly suffered from a grand mal seizure one night at dinner. I, being so young, suffered from nightmares and anxiety due to witnessing all the pain he had to go through. After brain surgery, radiation, and many sessions of chemotherapy the doctors had told us he was now in remission and the cancer was at a minimum. A short three months went by and we had many great memories including my mother and stepfather having their wedding they had planned long before cancer interrupted.…

Whether it was my grandfather and me making cookies for the family, golfing when I was young, going fishing, or drinking Hawaiian Punch in the grass with my brother and my father, we were always having a great time. Just these few memories remind me that bonds are built from love not proximity, and my love for him spans time and space. It is etched in my mind, the day I grabbed my fishing rod, left out the back door and went to catch fish with my grandfather. It meant a lot to me knowing that, to my grandfather, time with me was paramount. I could tell how much he loved me by the enthusiasm he always brought into things we did together.…

A grandparent’s love for their grandchild is something that cannot be explained, even the brightest mind cannot conjure up a word for this kind of love. Merriam Webster defines a grandfather as the father of your mother or father, but my grandfather was so much more. My grandfather was the glue in my life, he was the sun in my sky and the light of my path. Anitapoems says “My grandfather had the wisdom of an owl, the sense of humor of a headless chicken, and the heart of an angel.” And I agree with that.…
