Personal Narrative: How Baseball Has Changed My Life

All throughout one’s life, you must encounter obstacles, face adversity head on, and keep your head high all the while. As I grew up, I began to hate asking people for help, and I wanted to try things for myself. I felt like it was cheating to ask for help, because in life after high school, aren’t you usually having to do things by yourself? So, I figured, when the tasks that I was given were easy, I may as well practice doing them by myself. One example of this was when I was tasked with learning to umpire. I had played baseball since before T-Ball, and I had always enjoyed watching baseball with my family whenever it was on. …show more content…
Watching the umpires was something that seemed more interesting at times because they were the ones who really decided how a game went. A close play at home could be life or death for a team, and all that weight rested on the shoulders of the umpire, who after less than 2 seconds has to make a decision with millions of dollars on the line at times with millions watching and waiting for their call. I found the local umpiring league in my area, and I signed up. The classes met just 3 times before we had to take our test, and since I really wanted to become an umpire, I studied hard. Thankfully, it was merely 9-10 baseball, so it wasn’t anything too fast paced for my 15 year old brain to handle. When I wasn’t doing homework, I was studying the rulebook for my local league because many of their rules were much different than that of other leagues. They were designed to help aid the pitchers in that league that were known to struggle with hitting the strike zone. It also helped to prevent kids from stealing on every pitch that was also due to how terrible the pitching

Baseball: the sport where you stand around for 20 minutes and move 3 feet to the left and move 3 feet to the right. It’s so intense. It’s so intense that you could take a nap on the field with everything out there. Of course, I’m being sarcastic. The only time it’s actually fun is when you’re annihilating the other team while they’re asleep on the field.…

One situation where I found myself in a fixed mindset was when I was a freshman at Mountain Pointe high school trying to make the baseball team. At the time, I had a half-hearted passion for baseball that made me want to be on the school baseball team, but I felt that everything would come natural to me because I was Dominican. I was quite proud of how Dominicans were typically great at baseball quite naturally it seemed. However, with this knowledge I became highly critical about everything I did when playing baseball at the high school camps before the baseball tryouts. I did not focus on overall improvement as I tried to ensure that every throw, batting, and pitch was perfect.…

I swung, and ended up swinging as the ball passed me. The next pitch came and I waited a second longer and smacked the ball right back at the pitcher. I ran as fast as my little legs would move. I reached first base and looked at my dad to see him jumping up and down with excitement; he was so proud of me I couldn’t help but smile back at him. As the game progressed, I had no idea how I was magically given these talents.…
