Personal Narrative: How Baseball Changed My Life

Decent Essays
When I came to Hargrave in the 9th grade my plain was to better myself in academics and in baseball. Baseball has been one of my true passions since I was a little kid. My freshman year I was the youngest player on the Varsity team. I didn’t play much, but I knew it would be a learning experience so I accepting riding the bench the entire year. Then my sophomore year rolls around and I was a cocky kid who thought he was untouchable on the baseball field. I didn’t take my offseason workouts seriously, and practice seriously. New kids came who were honestly much better than me, so when tryouts came I was ill prepared. At the end of tryouts I did not make the final cut. My coach told me I didn’t make it, because I didn’t take anything serious during the offseason. I was very upset and chose not to believe …show more content…
I emailed an old coach of mine and we started doing hitting sessions for three days a week during the summer. When I got back to school I had a chip on my shoulder from last year and I was going to show everyone why I was so highly touted coming into the 9th grade. I realized what my coach had done for me also. He was looking out for me as a person more than a player. The lazy person cannot succeed in life it just doesn't work that way. People who put in hard work day in and day out are the ones you see succeed. My junior season I made the team by coming to every off season workout and practice. By the start of the season I was in the starting lineup for my team. The feeling you get coming from rock bottom after getting cut and then starting for the team was amazing. The emotions hit me hard especially looking back on being a little 9th grader who was cocky to getting cut and then making an impact for me team. I thank god and my coach everyday for what they did, because if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be the player or person I am today. Failure is part of everyone's life, don’t let it define you, but make something of

As soon as my dad could put a glove on my hand the learning process began and after my first practice I fell in love with the game. From that point on all I did was softball, it was my safe place, my other home and the one thing I knew I could do something great in. I would always want to just throw with my dad or my brother, as little as I was I wanted to show them that I could catch the hard balls they threw. Of course though, I couldn’t but I was in the process of getting there.…

I am going to be taking about baseball. I will talk about why I like it better than any other sport. I think baseball requires more mental abilities than physical because you have to be able to read pitches and you have to be able to read the batter and you have to read the ball when it comes off the bat. Baseball does require physical health to because you have to be able to hit hard, throw accurate and fast, and you have to be able to run and catch a ball if it comes to you. I like baseball better than any other sport because I think it challenges you more.…

One of the hardest parts about trying to accomplish this goals is my peers. I get told almost everyday that “I will never be able to make it to professional baseball” or “You won’t ever be good enough”. For some people this would discourage them, however I like to use it as motivation. It fuels me to know that one day when I can finally say I’ve made it, that all those people who said I would never make it, were proven wrong.…

I believe that my application would be incomplete if I did not write about baseball and the countless hours that I have spent working to perfect the craft. Since I was two years old, I have been involved in the game of baseball. I started by being dragged along on trips to my brother’s baseball games, until I was old enough to join a travel baseball team of my own. Almost every weekend since then was spent on the road at a travel baseball tournament, whether it was playing for my team, or watching my older brother’s team. Growing up, my ultimate goal was to receive a scholarship to play baseball at Stanford University, and because of that, I worked tirelessly to keep my grades up to the Stanford standard.…

For every team I didn’t make, I worked twice as hard and made it the following year. A great example of this for me is when I was cut first round for my section team in 8th grade. I didn’t give myself anytime to feel bad, and got right back to practicing. This past summer, not only did I make my section team, I continued through the next three tryouts and made USA U18 National Camp. I never lost hope, even when I faced the failure and challenge of being cut.…

Before I became the good baseball player I am today there were some struggles I had to go through. Back when I was about 10 years old I was an ok player because I sucked I thought I would never be good enough to impress my dad and showed him I didn’t suck. That didn’t matter how good I did if I messed up one little thing he will just tell me I suck and it wouldn’t matter if it was big or small the mistake was he would tell me I suck and not congratulate me on the things I did right. During when all of this was happening I was thinking im my head how I can improve to not make my dad mad. So when I would play I would play scared and with me playing scared that caused me to make mistakes…

It is my philosophy that hard work will always pay off sooner or later. Whether it be physical or mental, the reward is correspondent to the amount of effort put in. In 10th grade, I had back surgery that rendered my back weak. I set the very difficult goal of regaining my strength and working hard the next year in order to make varsity the following year. My ambition moved me to go to physical therapy and give it 110%.…

Transformation Journey My transformation from childhood to adulthood came as a 16 year old highschool student. At this point in time I had experienced senioritis (as a sophomore). School as a whole is a test of discipline more than intelligence, and as a “kid” I would brush tasks off to the side and only focus on assignments that interested me. Laziness had fully taken over my life and because of it I was unable to focus during school, on the baseball field, and with friends.…

When Professor Danner asked us to take up a task which we are likely to fail at and then write about it, only one thing came to my mind – getting on the Squash Varsity Team. Before I detail what I learned during my rather arduous journey, I’d like to give some background on my abilities in this game and why this was an appropriate choice for this particular assignment. I started playing squash when I was ten years old. This is actually a few years earlier than when most people, who go on to become professionals, start playing the game. Within a few months I become considerably good at the game (in my coach’s opinion) and started enjoying it so much that I was sure that this was what I wanted to play for the rest of my life.…
