Personal Narrative: How Asthma Changed My Life

Improved Essays
In life there’s always that one moment which changes your perspective on everything. Some may not notice at first, however, in my case it was handed to me on a silver platter. It all started when I was in the sixth grade. I must admit it was not a big surprise, but being told that because of something I could not control I would still have to change my life kind of scared me. After many tests and several doctors visits, I soon discovered the weakness in my lungs every time I ran and the reason I had struggled to play basketball in my earlier years. We arrived at the specialist around half an hour early. The appointment began with what felt like a billion pointless questions, once that was over I was soon forced into what felt like the most uncomfortable sheet I had even felt. The doctor then pried my tiny hands off my mothers’ and down the hall I went into a small room with nothing but what looked like a hospital bed and a chair for my specialist to sit in. I sat by myself for nearly 20 minutes in my sheet like dress and waited somewhat patiently for someone to explain to me what was going on. Soon two soft spoken women walked into my room with a huge machine with tubes coming out at every available spot. The test which I was asked to perform was to see how effective my lungs are able to bring oxygen to the rest of my body. The test was called Pulmonary Function Test (PFTs) its when you are asked to blow into a tube and you have to blow a certain strength before they would let you quit. I struggled heavily on this test, I

On a cold sunny day, I got the news that would change my life. A couple weeks before a family vacation to Canada, my parents decided to have my blood drawn and tested for a disease that makes you gluten intolerant. About halfway through that trip, in a loud food court, in a large shopping mall, my mom got a call from the doctor’s office. When she picked up the phone, the doctor said that my test came abnormal and that they would have to take another blood sample. When they took the blood sample, for the second time, the results came back as abnormal.…
