Personal Narrative: How Algebra Changed My Life

Improved Essays
I can recall a time when I challenged myself to do tremendous work over the summer. That summer was this year, where I encouraged myself to take drivers education for my license next year, test out of Algebra 2 and P.E., work at my parent’s nail salon to earn some cash, do my AP History and Advanced English homework, practiced my viola for Symphonic Orchestra, read during the night, and study for the S.A.T. (which was too early). I was prompted to act because I recently found my ambitions for my future, which is wanting to become some sort of engineer (undecided, but it is in this field), have the highest GPA possible, and get accepted into University of Michigan. These objectives did not came to me at the speed of light, but naturally throughout …show more content…
With my basic knowledge of math and acing the Geometry exam, I strived to learn three sections a day; two chapters per week. Compared this to the time it took to learn Geometry, I'm learning three times faster. This continued all the way till the week before testing out, and while I was in the middle of my crash course, my extra time in June was devoted to passing drivers …show more content…
But since my desire for getting a license and drive without the need of my parents grew, this irresistibly made me choose to take the class in this summer. Each night, my teacher assigned our class to read about three chapters on mostly unnecessary information that for me I thought I wouldn’t need in life. Let’s just say, this class is more suitable for students who are having a good summer with nothing to do; it takes about three to four hours a night just to read and remember the contents. With this, we were taking tests about every four days, and out of four tests, I only passed three. Despite passing my state test on the first shot, my time left came down to two months left. As Algebra 2 took up most of my daily schedule in the evening, I was rolling my other tasks, going to the gym early every morning to prep me for my evaluation, doing my other summer homework as soon as I got home, and the extra time I have left was put into reading and etc.
Over time, I fell into great fatigue, with only three to four hours of sleep, muscle pain from exercising, and still with homework to finish; this began to reflect on everything that was happening later. When it came to my testing out dates, I was unprepared. An all-nighter to study everything, I couldn't memorize half of the things I learned from both Gym and

What changes for MCbride is he starts to realizes that he can’t stay on the corner his whole life,he realizes that he has to try to make something out of himself. The moment that starts to define him was when he was almost killed messing around at the gas station. If I said I never fail i’d be lying,One example of my failure is when I Failed my Algebra class. I learned that Algebra is extremally extremally hard to learn when A teacher isn’t good at their job and what It takes to be willing even when not willing. It’s very strange how one experience or choice you make in your life can change the rest of your life that follows that event, would you then in turn change these decisions you made. Such as your what if your mom conceived you not on the knowing basis. What if everyone was telling her not to because she was to be a single mom and that’s not a world a child should be born into, but then what if she challenged this belief that she grew up with. This then in turn affected all her choices later in life, but then vice versa what if she didn't challenge this belief and stuck with what she knew. This may be of the more extreme choices in life that some people must make but we all have that certain time in our life that comes where we must break away and make…

Throughout my entire school career, I have been frustrated at my math classes, but it wasn’t that they were going too fast; it was that they were going too slow. Every opportunity to move ahead I was given, I used. When I was given the chance to move up from Algebra II to pre-calculus, I studied for hours every day up until the day of the test came. “Beep! Beep!…

Sitting in a hard plastic chair in my math class I felt paralyzed. The heat in the room was unimaginable on the cool autumn day. I could not be the only one that was feeling it. At the same time I could barely keep head straight as the math test stared back at me with harsh eyes telling me “you will never be able to pass this class,” in a slithering tone. A drop of sweat rolled down the side of my face.…

I almost had a heart attack when I received my math test with a big fat red F on top of it. It was the third F I've gotten alone in just math class. I was good in the other subjects such as, physical education, science, and reading. The only thing that I had trouble with was math, I hated math and I didn't understand a single thing that was happening when she taught a certain subject. I was going to have to do summer school if I didn’t get my grade up, and I already had my vacation planned out.…

“I’m ready, I’m ready” says my childhood star-Spongebob before starting each day of work. This was also the same attitude with which I started my junior year with. Unfortunately, unlike Spongebob I did not end up continuing with that same attitude. The year was 2016, and I was certainly filled with hope for the new school year, but all to no avail.…

If I wasn’t getting it, I would come into to school a bit early. Staying up half the night wasn’t going to help me improve my performance in class. I would study for test and quizzes in advance. As soon as I found out about the assessment I would study. While I studied every night I only studied for 20 minutes, which actually helped me remember the lessons better.…

I walked into my high school for the first time a shy, naive, non-resourceful kid who didn’t think that he would need to study for the classes he had take and that high school would be a breeze like middle school was. It’s easy to say that I was clearly not ready for the challenging classes that faced me. I ended my first trimester devastated, but determined to improve my performance come next trimester. As an intrinsically motivated student, I decided that if I was going to get the grades I desired, I would need to do something I had never done before, and that was to study regularly and consistently. The next trimester, I put my old habits to rest as I stopped procrastinating, and started to use the resources that I hadn’t even tried to use…

As a freshman and sophomore in college, I attended BGSU Firelands near my home town. Because of this, I was able to coach high school soccer, basketball and tennis. One of my players on the freshman basketball team last winter was receiving an F in his algebra class, and it actually made him academically ineligible for the second half of the season. He was not fond of his teacher, rarely did his homework, and did poorly on his tests. His mother knew I was studying to become a math teacher, so she asked me to tutor him after practices.…

When I first began this class I thought that this would be just another introductory class that is required to orient you to the expectations of the particular college. Now, after completing this class, I know that this is not the case. Personal Dimensions of Learning has been a great help, not only to my school work, but also in my daily life. Before taking this class, I thought that learning, and completing daily tasks, were mostly memorizing the order of the way things are supposed to be done and just completing the task. I never liked this strategy, but it always seemed to be the most convenient way to get things done at school, home, and work.…
