Personal Narrative: How Algebra Changed My Life

Improved Essays
I can recall my recent summer when I challenged myself to do tremendous homework. Looking back to my previous summers, they are all boring, so I encouraged myself to take drivers education for my license next year, test out of Algebra 2 and P.E., work at my parent’s nail salon to earn some cash, do my AP History and Advanced English homework, practiced my viola for Symphonic Orchestra, read during the night, and study for the S.A.T. (which was indeed, way too early for me). I was prompted to act because I recently found my ambitions for my future. My goals are to become some sort of engineer (undecided, but it’s related to this field), have the highest GPA possible, and get accepted into University of Michigan
These ambitions didn’t hit me at the speed of light, but naturally throughout my ninth grade as I transition to a broader level of education. But with the thought that three months away from school was good enough to work on these tasks, time utterly proved me wrong through several results…

After running past my grandma and forgetting to pick up my brothers from school, they assumed I was up to something insane. Indeed, I was insane! Each day, I strived to learn three sections a day–two chapters per week–a whole semester of work crammed into a month. None of my family members were pleased with my extremes, my younger brothers just looked at me with serious laughter, judging me for being too smart. “Let’s go play outside Steven,” my younger brother stated excitedly. “I have homework to do… please let me study… you can play alone,” I explained calmly. He didn’t acknowledge the hard work I put into school, but I still lived till this day taking no

Have you ever stopped caring so much that whatever happens, happens? I remember the time I had gotten in trouble by my mom because I had walked home from school. It was a gloomy day from it being so cloudy and cold. I was talked into walking home during school by friends whom, at the time didn't care about school as much as I did, cared nothing of school. I didn’t like it, but then again I started not to care either.…

What changes for MCbride is he starts to realizes that he can’t stay on the corner his whole life,he realizes that he has to try to make something out of himself. The moment that starts to define him was when he was almost killed messing around at the gas station. If I said I never fail i’d be lying,One example of my failure is when I Failed my Algebra class. I learned that Algebra is extremally extremally hard to learn when A teacher isn’t good at their job and what It takes to be willing even when not willing. I was willing even when I was not because I knew I had to try even if i didn’t get it at all.…

It’s very strange how one experience or choice you make in your life can change the rest of your life that follows that event, would you then in turn change these decisions you made. Such as your what if your mom conceived you not on the knowing basis. What if everyone was telling her not to because she was to be a single mom and that’s not a world a child should be born into, but then what if she challenged this belief that she grew up with. This then in turn affected all her choices later in life, but then vice versa what if she didn't challenge this belief and stuck with what she knew. This may be of the more extreme choices in life that some people must make but we all have that certain time in our life that comes where we must break away and make…

Since day one of my freshmen year, I knew I wanted to make my education count 100%. Throughout my life, I’ve had my fair share of good and bad decisions but the best decision of my life was to get my grades straight and focus on school. For the past two and a half years, i’ve put my absolute best into coming out on top and so far i’ve succeeded. Being invited into the National Honors Society is definitely one of my biggest accomplishments that i’m very proud of. When I was a bit younger, around seventh or eighth grade, my grades weren’t anything I took a lot of pride in.…

Teddy Roosevelt once said that nothing worth having comes easy. With this in mind, I have actively spent my high school years working to ensure that my success and achievements are fruits of hard work and perseverance, rather than sheer luck. These past four years, I have dedicated my young mind to absorbing the valuable knowledge that pools before me in my rigorous AP courses. In addition, I also invested a good portion of my time into my school’s band program. Although balancing academics and such a demanding extracurricular activity was difficult, I managed to find the time to also participate in very rewarding organizations such as National Honor Society, among others.…

My life began to spiral downward before fifth grade began. I found myself an endless loop over summer vacation of waking up, experiencing the day as a blur, sleep, then repeat. This drove me to discover a new way to spend my day. On the television I noticed a recurring advertisement for a game called ‘World of Warcraft’. At first I instilled the mindset that I could spend my time pragmatically but eventually I succumbed to boredom.…

This past summer I took an algebra class at STC that really boosted my academically confidence. I had gotten quite a few B’s in my last classes and just decided to switch that around and get an A in algebra. I have always liked algebra, but I was never too sure as if I was good enough to get such a high grade. I had an epiphany where I thought about my future. I thought about how if I wanted to succeed, I needed to try harder and push myself.…

I first saw "e" on my TI-36 calculator 2 years ago. I did not know what it was. Originally, my thought process told me that "e" was just an alternative symbol for pi that is only used in advanced and college math courses. But my brain decided that "e" was one of those an alphabetical variables I was seeing in my problems. (I was taking Algebra 1 at the time.).…

As a little girl, I always used to struggle with mathematics no matter how hard I tried. My grades were always fine, but I would get so frustrated that I always needed to ask someone for help. I remember being selected to take Algebra 1 in 8th grade, and although I was excited, at the same time I was extremely nervous. In my mind, I felt that I was not good enough, yet I still tried my best. There were times I gave up, but when I passed that class with a B, I was thrilled.…

While I was still studying in middle school, I usually played a lot of games and refused to do any homework. For example, I would play on Saturday and Sunday and did all of my homework on Sunday night, which was a really unwise decision. However, I have changed after one time when I had to give up my sleeping time and did homework. It was a painful night, which I would never forget. I remember on that weekend, I played for the whole Saturday and half of the Sunday.…

Math wasn't always difficult, in the past I honestly think I was better at math or maybe math was just easier back then. In elementary school I remember that in award ceremony's I would be rewarded 3 math medals and only received 1 language arts medal. Now as for middle school, math did start to get a bit more challenging. If there was ever a problem that I struggled on I would just ask my friends or the teacher for help. In the past when there was a difficult problem I would just work on my own to figure out the solution, and if I couldn't find it I'd just ask for help.…

The life I lived whenever I was younger is drastically different than the one I live today. As a child, I was raised on a farm in Scott County with my mother, father, and older brother. My father worked as a farmer, and my mother resided at home with a modest job on the side. We traveled several times a year, whether it be a brief commute to Colorado, or a plane trip to Mexico, we did so together. Although we were a blessed family, only a few years later our lives would be altered drastically.…

Self Evaluation: An Analysis of Senior English Senior year is filled with both excitement and an overload of stress. While still attending high school and its workload, pile college applications and scholarships on top of all that. Most seniors feel ‘senioritis’ during their senior year and it getting past it becomes one of the hardest parts of senior year. I was very nervous, my hand that held the pencil sweat a lot, and the pencil tip was shaken, which made my letters looked weird. Finally, I got to next grade; therefore, my dad was very happy with me, he gave me the big smile, and also patted my head smoothly. I never understood how effort can help people become clever until that summer camp. This situation made me know what Carol S. Dweck explains, “the idea that the harder you work, the more your ability will grow and that even geniuses have had to work hard for their accomplishments” (2) means. So, I’ve read books to books for two months without stopping, which is my effort that brings me to the…
