Personal Narrative: How Adversity Changed My Life

When my mom was diagnosed with Anaplastic astrocytoma, my whole life fell apart. However, as I got older I realized that adversity provided an opportunity for self growth. As a result of what happened to my mom, I learned to convert my emotions into motivation. I learned how to cope with my internal struggles and not let it faze me. When I was bullied, it taught me how to block their voices out. When I was sexually molested, it forced me to stand up for myself. When I was told that “girls are just housewives and nothing more”, it pushed me to prove them wrong.

The troubles I faced serve as a grim reminder that my time is limited. There will be hardships in life that hold us back, but what defines us are not the struggles we face, but the way
