Now in days every one is a “winner” every one gets to go home with a trophy even if they didn’t even win. They are always being praised for just being there, even if they don’t try. If someone tells you that you’re a winner, then you automatically just are. Winning is never giving up even after you have lost.

It was the most basic of mornings that I woke up to. The sun was not yet shining its warmth on my little world, however I still dragged myself out of my warm consuming bed leaving it and my dream Mister Sandman had given me, behind. I swung on my Gator shirt and black shorts without even having to think, still mentally dragging myself out of sleep. The only reason I got up this early or would ever get up this early is for what I truly love, swim practice. I adored getting into freezing cold water

By the time I was on the block I was already pumped. As the buzzer went off I was flying over the water with one of the longest dives you’ve ever seen. When I finally entered to water I was surrounded and engulfed by it. All there was, was water and time. I kicked and pulled as hard as I could and I refused to breath or even think.my body was begging me for the most essential thing to live, air, but I refused to give in to my flesh. By the time I got to the wall I knew how fast I was going so I did an early turn and my momentum lead me to the wall. I shot off with so much force my thighs cursed me with pain, but I kicked the water and pulled at it, for it was the only thing between we and the wall. I felt fast and knew I was fast but could not feel the win. I kept feeling that Rebecca Granman was one stroke ahead of me so I pulled and kicked faster than I thought my body could handle. Then 33.3 seconds later I was at the wall. I had to calm my self for the moment I looked up at the board, but I didn’t have to. I knew I had won when I saw Rebecca Granman’s face. I looked over at her and said with a equal level of evil she had presented me

Because the ninth graders were not allowed to run in this strictly middle school race, I was among the oldest in the group. This was the meet that our team had been preparing for since the beginning of the season, and I prepared even more intensely in the past few days. I had been hydrating well, eating the right foods, and even skipped swim practice the day before to rest my muscles before the meet. This had been the moment that I had been preparing for, and made sacrifices for, and doing well felt like the only option. The pressure was swallowing me up, and pulling me back to the…

I remember while growing up, my parents (mostly my father) would ask when I was going to grow up and “get over horses”. I first fell in love with horses when I was four-years-old because of an Australian movie called “The Rogue Stallion” (1990) my mother bought when a Christian catalog had a sale on VHSs. The movie follows Anna, a teenager whose father works with horses and is accidentally killed by a spooked horse one day. Anna’s mother wants her daughter to have nothing to do with horses, especially the wild Brumby stallion her father’s old rival is set on destroying.…

Ever since I was four years old, and it came time to make my Christmas list the first thing written on the paper was my very own horse. Eventually, after years of asking and taking lessons at a local barn, my Christmas wish came true and I was the proud owner of my first horse. Growing up around horses, I can say for certain that the most important things I've learned in my life have come from a thousand pound animal. Having a horse is a huge responsibility. No matter how you feel, tired, sick, or lazy you have a responsibility for that animal that can't be neglected.…

Since I was about ten, I have been obsessed with horses. Obsessed truly is a good term for my enchantment with equines, but a girlhood obsession is much different from the obsession of young adulthood. My interest persisted long after most childhood infatuations do. I began by researching horse breeds extensively and learning to draw the animals. Eventually, my mother appeased me with regular horse lessons, but horseback riding is an expensive hobby.…

And when we got out we did what you’d usually expect kids to do at the beach, but then we were gonna see who could stay underwater the longest, and the whole time there were waves, they weren't strong waves or anything, but enough to move a bunch of little kids. And I knew that I’d win because I could hold my breath for a really long time, and so when we were underwater the waves pushed us and the waves ended up pushing me a few feet out further and while I was underwater I didn't even notice.…

The bed mercilessly taunts my exhausted limbs to return but my determined heart persuades me to brave the trial by water once more. As I dive over the ice cold pool, dread and regret fill every moment until my body finally makes contact. For two, sometimes three, hours the situation will only worsen as I repeatedly raise my arms above my head and pull back as hard as possible. Weeks of this pass by, all for the sake of being able to travel through 100 meters of water a few milliseconds faster. Swimming has been my primary sport since the age of eight.…

The two short stories I chose to compare are “The Rocking Horse Winner” and “Young Goodman Brown”. “The Rocking Horse Winner” was written by D.H. Lawrence and “Young Goodman Brown” was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. In “The Rocking Horse Winner” the main conflict of the story is that Paul’s and his parents are struggling mightily with their economic situation. The story is about a family that consists of a father and mother, a son named Paul and his two sisters. Paul is always curious about his family’s financial situation.…
