Personal Narrative: Homeless

In 2008, when the stock market crashed, my dad lost his business, something he had sunk everything into. He was suddenly left with a wife and five children to provide for and no means of doing so. We had some savings, but they didn’t last long. Because my dad didn’t have a college education, it was nearly impossible for him to find work. He used what skills he had to work odd jobs, scraping together what little earnings he could. He designed websites, sprayed weeds, and sold security systems door to door. There was almost nothing he wouldn’t do to provide for us.
This was the hardest time of my dad’s life, and my life too. He struggled for three years before finding steady and sufficient employment. He spent months away from home, moving all

We lived off of food stamps and hand-me-downs, but the funny thing is, none of that really mattered. We all, especially my parents, felt the weight of our awful situation. However, we didn’t dwell on the negative. It was something we had to work at every day, and some days were better than others. While my dad was away, knocking doors, we invented silly traditions to keep him and ourselves motivated. We recorded inspirational scenes from movies and sent them to him. Every time he made a sale we treated each of ourselves to a glass of chocolate milk. My mom was amazing. She worked her own odd jobs, sewing peoples’ prom dresses, making clothing alterations, and babysitting. She took us to the park and the beach and did everything she could think of to keep us sheltered from the magnitude of our crisis. She made us feel like a normal, happy family. Our friends were also unimaginably kind and helpful. We frequently received anonymous gifts left at our doorstep from those who were aware of our circumstances. People left bags of oranges, desserts, and sometimes even envelopes full of cash. One Christmas we opened our door to a massive pile of bags and boxes full of presents for everyone in our family. I will never be able to fully express my gratitude for such selfless acts of kindness that gave us hope and relief during this

I can only imagine how difficult it is to have to care for a family of six boys considering how amazing of a job they did. Throughout my lifetime I have watched as my parents work night and day to not only provide for our needs but to also each and every one of our wants. They are the most diligent selfless people people I have ever seen and will continue to be for as long as they live. They have taught me what hard work is and what it means to make sacrifices for the well being of others. They have educated me on sharing and service and not by force, but by example.…

Just a few days before Christmas 2015, I happened to be traveling over the Q bridge heading to the infamous 91/95 interchange in Ct, as I emerged from the underpass that leads to 91, I noticed a line of red tail lights that seemed to go on for miles. Sailing along at 2-4 mph there appeared a man holding a small cardboard sign with just two words: Homeless Veteran. When parallel to the guy, I lowered the window half way, and on a whim, asked him if he had eaten today. No he replied. I said, its Christmas and I'm on my way to the diner ......…

Most of my life I was raised in poverty, so my political views may differ from others. When migrating from Cuba there was only one thing that my parents could do, and it was work. My whole life I had to grow up in Government Projects for the needy. It wasn’t particularly a bad time for me, but for my parents who wanted a better life for me and my sister it was. When it came to food we would survive on food stamps.…

I consider myself fortunate. I rarely get sick, I have never broken a bone, and I have never needed any kind of extensive medication. I consider myself fortunate not only because I have never had to deal with the trauma of having a serious medical emergency, but also because I have never truly had to deal with the healthcare system. Given the few short interactions I have had to have with my insurance company I know that having to deal with insurance is nothing but a headache. I hope that by the time I need to call on my insurance in a major way there will be fixes made to their system.…

During my experience of feeding the homeless around my city, I chose to go to the first neighborhood I’ve lived in out of several. As I was taking in the nostalgic scenery, I motioned towards a man who took shelter behind a dumpster. Not wanting to startle him, I kindly greeted and offered him one of the many pb&j ’s I had prepared earlier. “I don’t want your goddamn sandwich, I’d rather eat Mcdonalds,” he said harshly, assuming I was helping him out of pity and not the kindness of my heart.…

My oldest brother hit some hard times, when his “home” (car) was towed; though embarrassed, his plight was discovered, then he relocated home by loving parents. With political unrest, I questioned, what will happen to refugees without homes, like my brother? Compelled by castaways who had suffered much, had little, but seemed happy, I contacted a refugee rescue organization; working together, we came up with a plan to improve living conditions for a family. Consequently, I agreed to furnish their apartment.…
