Personal Narrative-Homeless Veteran

Just a few days before Christmas 2015, I happened to be traveling over the Q bridge heading to the infamous 91/95 interchange in Ct, as I emerged from the underpass that leads to 91, I noticed a line of red tail lights that seemed to go on for miles. Sailing along at 2-4 mph there appeared a man holding a small cardboard sign with just two words:
Homeless Veteran. When parallel to the guy, I lowered the window half way, and on a whim, asked him if he had eaten today. No he replied. I said, its Christmas and I'm on my way to the diner ...... if you'd like to come; it will be my treat. He walked up to the car and placed his forearms on the door frame so he could hear. Asking 'is this for real' - yes I answered BUT he had to agree to two conditions. You can not ask me for more money other than your

We pulled in and sat at the counter. He waited for me to give my order and I was sure that he checked the menu to see that his entree was less than mine. He ate quickly and I was only half done....asking if he had a favorite pie, had the waitress bring him a piece. Asking if he wanted to go back to the highway; he thanked me and said that he'd like to stay a little longer and have another coffee. Leaving the counter, I went to the cashier, saying this is for our dinner, that is for the waitress and this is for a large coffee to take when he leaves. She said, ok I got it. Leaving the dinner, I glanced back at the counter and noticed that he was cuddling the cup with both hands, as she refilled it, and reasoned that he must be warming his hands to go back in the cold. One needs to be careful nowadays cause I'll never know if he was really homeless or even a veteran. But I did recognize hungry and cold, and on this day just before Christmas - that was enough. Having lived for nearly 70 years, I embarrassed to say that it took me nearly all that time to finally realize who the who's really are

She was one of the girliest girls I knew since grade school, with her stylish culottes and pink garments of all different shades for all different occasions. She was the epitome of a mixture between pure innocence and quirk that boldly took her rightful place in the middle of my heart. Mary Anne wasn’t just all of that; she was also my affectionate girlfriend, my warm-hearted best friend who I could talk about anything with, from the most trivial things to the very meaning of our whole existence. At the time, all I could feel was the absolute joy that I got from spending my time with her. We had our entire happiness in the future planned out, a dream wedding and all, but maybe that was the reason why I wouldn’t have ever imagined that I would be feeling so lost and empty just a few years later, alone and missing a part of myself.…

Since the beginning of the vietnam war, the number of homeless veterans expanded dramatically. Thirteen percent of homeless men in the United States are veterans. It is estimated that there are over fifty-thousand homeless veterans on any given night. It is sad too see someone who literally fought and defended our country, and our lives with everything they had living in the streets, dying of hunger. It is mournful to see the government to just thank them with no reward and throw them into the streets like that.…

As you drive to work, walk to class, or bustle through busy streets, do you ever take the time to stop and look what is around you? Do you notice the older man that stands on the corner of the street wearing a blue and red cap, wrapped in a blanket because he has no winter coat? Perhaps you give a pity induced smile and pass by without noticing that his cap reads “Proud to be a U.S. Veteran”. Each day most Americans, including myself, fail to realize that nearly a quarter of our homeless citizens are U.S. veterans. Unfortunately, homelessness in our veterans has become a calamity nationwide; with high homeless, depression, and suicide rates, our heroes are not living the “American Dream” they fought for during their years of service.…

It seems that we are always in the midst of changing ourselves for others, why do people who we think are robust and vigorous always stab us in the back. Why are they never there when we need them to be, we never really take it as serious as we should, we seem to care about ourselves more than anything. We do this because we want others to accept us we want to look suitable, this is not how we should be acting, this is the generation where…

Homeless Veterans With approximately one-fourth of the homeless population belonging to the veteran population (Burt, Aron, Douglas, Valente, Lee & Iwen, 1999), there is a need to determine how this specific group can be helped. By doing so, there is a possibility that homeless individuals from the general population can be helped as well. Cunningham (Aug 2009) emphasizes that working to eliminate homelessness in veterans may be part of the solution to ending homelessness in the United States. Being a large group, veterans take away resources from others which are homeless, who do not have the same support systems in place, through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).…
