Personal Narrative: Homeless Takeover

I have worked at a skatepark that offers family friendly amusement for our community. When it is not football season, Friday and Saturday nights are incredibly popular for the youth of Madison to come to our facility to roller skate and play games. We also cater corporate events and birthday parties. For catering events, you obviously must make sure to have plenty of food ready to please the large amount of people. Since a large amount of food is required, there is usually a surplus the employees may eat after, then we dispose of what is left. Unfortunately, a large amount is wasted.

One Saturday evening, we held a large catering event for a national research organization celebrating their employees. As the event was ending, we were conversing with the man who scheduled the event and wrapping the excess food. He informed us he would like to do something meaningful with the leftovers and I suggested we donate them to the local homeless shelter instead of wasting anything. We called the Downtown Rescue Mission and they informed us they would gladly accept the hot meals. I was so moved by this idea I volunteered myself and my car to take the donation downtown. A few other employees and I loaded up my car with a fresh all-American meal and I drove downtown to be greeted by a volunteer who helped me unload everything. I was glad to clock out and spend my time doing this, because this was something so worthwhile and

I feel my soul has been touched by this act and I want to continue this act of kindness. I want other souls to be moved. Whether I am physically delivering to the mission, raising awareness, or moving people with my artwork, I want to pass this electric feeling onto others and spur a chain reaction to compel a positive global cause. I have had various experiences in the last two years, but the one I feel is the most significant is the time I spent volunteering for the Detroit Mission Trip. This opportunity presented itself in June of 2014 through my church, Metro South Church. I spent one week, Monday through Friday, each day-all day, commuting from my home in Brownstown to the inner city of Detroit. Each day of this mission trip consisted of various volunteer jobs. I was one of approximately 100 people that engaged in the process of making life better for others.…

My parents relocated my siblings and I from Quetzaltenango, Guatemala to San Diego, California in order to allow us to lead a prosperous future. Unlike children in Guatemala, we were presented with an excellent education in San Diego and indulged in learning. For as long as I can recall, discovering new facts and learning new things about the world fascinated me; consequently, I quickly began wanting to help others in their pursuit of learning. I was always the first to offer help to my struggling peers and would stay behind during recess to assist them. My acts were fueled by the desire to see students succeed and I would do anything to help them prosper.…

I volunteered at the Forest Mall for the Tootsie Roll Drive. This organization provides service for those people with intellectual disabilities. What I physically did while volunteering at the Forest Mall was hand out Tootsie Rolls outside to the people that donated money. I also would kindly ask people to donate as they came in or out of the mall. I kept a kind and loving smile on my face to welcome anyone who was willing to donate.…

Service is something that is near and dear to my heart, and this trip was no exception. My FYS group and I went to a local non for profit Atlas (Attaining Truth, Love, And Self-control) to do projects they needed done. This organization works with troubled people who need a mentor or a shoulder to lean on. Because they are a non for profit and are very busy, the people on pay roll didn’t have the time to do yard work or extra jobs around the building.…

This was inspired by a bible verse that has forever stayed in my heart, Matthew 25. It is time to lift up our voice and fight for those who can’t fight for themselves, its time to work for those who are in need and its time to spread love to the brokenhearted. That was the vision I had when I began this project. The Giving Box is has assisted over 250 homeless people both physically and spiritually. I can’t wait to see what is in stored these upcoming years.…

Homelessness is something that has affected everyone in one way or another. Whether it be having a close relative or friend losing all they have had or having an encounter with a homeless person at a gas station. No matter who we are we all have faced homelessness more often than it should. Many have been able to get past the dirty, tattered, and shabby look homeless people have and treat them like a normal human being. Yet, a small population of individuals view homeless people as scum and treat them horribly.…

The Fight to End Homelessness As I drive down the streets of Miami, the first thing that catches my eyes are the amount of homeless people asking for money or sleeping on the hot, dirty sidewalks. These people are in a constant struggle to survive every single day. During nights when it’s pouring…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…
