Personal Narrative: Homecoming Adversity

Improved Essays
In my brief 17 years I’ve face my share of adversity. From losing my Dad when I was nine years old to moving to a new state and high school at the start of my freshman year. These hardships have motivated me as well as molded me into a resilient, adaptive and optimistic young man. Prior to moving to Kansas, I was a four sport athlete. That is what I did, played sports. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, my path was altered at Blue Valley High School pointing me to numerous leadership roles and opportunities which I am forever grateful for. Due to these experiences, I’ve gained immeasurable knowledge and confidence; became independent and responsible all while maintaining that competitive and driven spirit! Recently I was voted Homecoming

I was handing out food with Herb at the closed down grocery store. The power outage was really taking its toll. Then in somewhat of a flash we both found ourselves on the first episode of season 19, on my favorite show Survivor! “Umm… is it just me or did we not sign up for this?” exclaimed Herb in a shocked voice. I wasn’t really sure either.…

As an athlete, I began my journey in sports full of dedication, fire, and hopeful anticipation of what I could do on the football field and on the basketball court. Much of my life has been devoted to extracurricular activities such as sports and the comelec, which taught me hard lessons in ethics and values that have made me who I am today. I not only represented my school varsity, but also sports clubs outside of school, which led me to compete in several local and international tournaments. As well as my passion for sports, I grew into my passion for service; service for others and for my school, partaking in clubs and community service activities, each endeavor playing a role in the development of my abilities and expansion of my potential…

Personal statement The year 2004 marked a time in my family’s history in which we took a substantial step forward by coming to the United States. Before that, we lived through and experienced a lot of unspeakable things. Originating in Somalia, my parents understood that it was a place where nothing could be achieved. Civil war broke out, devastating hundreds upon thousands of lives, including several of my family members. Corruption infected the government, military, and all forms of law enforcement.…

As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

In high school, I have never been involved with athletics as much as I had wished. I did not much affinity towards our sports teams either. Athletics seemed more of a requirement and a hassle rather than something that had a lot of value in it. At Syracuse, I would want to become someone who doesn’t see sports in that light. I want to be involved with sports at the university, both playing and cheering, and have a school and sports teams that I can feel vast amounts of pride for, even after I become an alumni.…

I was smiling the whole time as the skin around my neck was being ripped off. Well I wasn’t actually smiling and as brutal as I made it sound, it wasn’t as horrific an event now that I look back on it. The incident occurred while I was on Spring Break during my freshman year in high school. My family and I were vacationing in Gatlinburg, Tennessee;which if I might add we’ve been there about eight times since I was seven years old. I remember clearly that day down to the exact temperature.…

I am petitioning for a retroactive withdrawal from spring semester 2016. During both the fall/2015 and spring/2016 I was asked to move back home to become the primary caretaker of my 92 year old grandmother who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. Initially the routine was simple, school, work, and my grandmother. Keeping up with the school work didn’t seem to be an issue until the work load from my course began to pile up, having to commit so much of my time to my grandmother as well as school and work was just too much for myself to keep up with.…

Adversity is what shapes a person’s life, and helps develop a person’s character and mindset. As people, we all go through situations that we think we're never going to get through, but when we do, we become a better person as a result. Our darkest moments of our lives, the love involved in our lives, our society, and our political hardships are what shapes us over time as a person. Our darkest moments of our lives can really shape up our perception of our surroundings, and make us more wiser.
