The downstairs was silent, sunlight danced through the windows and I couldn’t stop the stupid smile that had spread over my face, twisting my head either side to click my neck, snatching the remote of the side table of the three seater couch my thumb hit the power button and the Samsung beeped in reply, with a grin I collapsed back onto the couch, my butt making contact with a very hard substance.

A loud wheeze quickly escaped the person I had sat on.

Stranger’s eyelid’s pulled back slowly and his mouth opened slightly, his green eyes met mine before he lifted the hand that had been on the floor to rub his eyes,”Morning, Angel.” his voice was gruff due to sleep and his body rumbled beneath me.

The crisp breeze rustled my hair as I walked out of my house on the fall September day with my dad drilling instructions into my head. It was my first Little League baseball game ever, and my dad wanted to make sure it wasn’t my last. Being seven years old and never touching a baseball was something that had scared me; a lot. I had no idea what to think about this foreign, petrifying, game could possibly be about. The car ride from my house was only a few minutes away from the fields where I would begin my baseball career.…

I was 13 years old, just starting off high school, when I realized what this dark cloud that’s been floating over me for the past couple of months really is. It wouldn’t be until more than a year later until I seek out professional help. It started off innocently enough as just a feeling of constant emptiness at the pit of my stomach. It slowly turned into randoms bouts of extreme rage, where I’d take out my anger physically, not just on the walls and mirrors of my childhood home and not just on my family, but on myself. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way, why I wasn’t “normal”.…

Twenty-two years ago on January 4th, 1994, Taryn Staley was up at Finny Cumberlane to celebrate Gary’s, Taryn’s brother, fifteenth birthday. It was her mom, her step dad, her friend (Amy), Gary, her mom’s friend, four or five of Gary’s friends, and herself who traveled up the Finny Cumberlane mountain side. Their day was spent playing in the snow and snowboarding on the small, snow-capped mountain, but the day took a turn for the worse on their way home. “At 10:00 AM everyone met at our house in Burlington with their snowboarding gear, extra clothes, etc. We also loaded up a camp stove, pans, cups, cocoa and a pot of chile with freetos dip chips for lunch.…

I feel someone shake my shoulder gently. "Nooooo. " I groan, curling up more into Hermann's parka. My head pounding and my throat scratchy. “Baruch atah Adonai, noten ha’torah”, I passionately chanted before my friends, family, and the congregation of Beth Shalom. Those five Hebrew words, which had been ingrained in my memory over the past months, concluded my first aliyot; according to Rabbi Kosman, I was now a full-fledged man. No longer would I be sidelined to the kids’ table at family events nor constrained by the 10 o’clock lights-out policy. Rather, I would enjoy all the benefits that seemed to come from adulthood: rated-R movies, the occasional sip of wine at the dinner table, and access to my own personal finances.…

It's funny how more than half of my bigoted so-called friends and some of my ex coworkers of mine have finally come out the closet. I remember the good old days when it was "Hi and Whats up". In light of of the elections we've talked politics, it was fun to agree to disagree( congrats to you guys, win some lose some, that's what makes this country great, the ability to make a choice)...moving on, I seen this phrase lately...if you don't like it get out "my country" or if you don't speak the language get up and go..that tickles me the most. Some go on to claim, that I'm half of this with a little of that, I'm Irish or Italian, Greek or Jew, my girl is Hispanic or even.....drumroll, black. As I hear this it transformed me into my new alter…

I sat by the hearth warming my cold hands against the blazing fire. My hands were too numb even to begin my schoolwork. The mile walk from the schoolhouse was a great burden during winter days. When I arrived home the hem of my skirt was soaked from the piles of snow on the ground. My mother worked hard to provide for me and my many siblings.…

My mama, then repeatedly whispered to me that everything was going to alright… That it was all over now, but it didn’t matter. I was inconsolable. Casper, who I stilled carried and was nestled in between us let out a little, soft meow abruptly catching me off guard and making me smile and laugh a little. With my breathing still hitching I raised him up to my face to feel the warmth of his fur on my skin.…

The last beams of sunlight fade away behind the houses across the street. The soft sound of yarn being pulled out of its roll is drowned out by the chatter of a news anchor on the tv. Cheryl Austin sits in her chair, crocheting a boot cuff out of a deep blue yarn. Occasionally she looks up when her husband speaks, or when something interesting happens on the tv. In streaks her two dogs, Koko and Andi, growling and yipping at each other playfully.…

Reconciliation Interrupted by the faint sounds of birds chirping and grass swaying in the gentle breeze, the calming silence became a distant memory. As the birds flapped their wings, moving at the edge of the tiny meadow, from one tree to the next, they cast their shadows over the body of a small brown skinned, black haired girl. She lay on her back in the hilltop grass, facing directly up towards the almost blinding light of the afternoon sun. Her dark skin, holding a lively warm glow, reflected the rays of sunlight off of her quickly flickering eyelids. Suddenly, they were open, revealing her dark brown almond shaped eyes and her ever so slightly off white sclera.…
