Flames engulfed my blurred vision as my sobbing, curled up figure choked and convulsed. Oxygen depleted from my lungs as the smoke quickly drew in to replace it. The blazing inferno roared in my ears -- over my piercing screams -- demanding that it be heard. I could feel the intensifying heat, but I was numb to the imminent burns; I was numb to everything. The sky began to blacken, as did my perception. I embraced the gradual darkness with open arms; it replaced the anguish with soothing nothingness.

I awoke to barrenness and smoky tendrils idly floating away into the sky above. Everything within sight was charred and blackened. I only had a vague recollection of the destruction that occurred the night before, as if a fragment of my lucid mind was ripped away and forever captured in a state of asphyxia -- lost for eternity.

The heftiness of my unbeknownst burden begged for me to recall the previous events and more of my past; and I refused; the past always conjured an instability beyond my competence to handle. The memories tried to drive their way through their barrier as I continued to fight against them, the resulting pressure constantly increasing into an excruciating, unbearable pain. I broke into tears as the mental struggle ensued, attempting to keep the unsettling thoughts at bay. My nails tore into my skin and blood ran from my bruising knuckles, my face paled and I released a shriek begging for this continuous torment to

The adrenaline was pumping through my veins and I couldn’t stop despite the fact that my lungs felt as if there were icy shards lodged in my chest. Haunted figures of the men that destroyed my life as I knew it flashed before my eyes as I lept over crates and pushed down trash cans behind me, my path marked by a riddled maze of rotted food and old possessions. The tears in my eyes were no longer tears, but streaks of moisture…

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, we're all accustomed to a certain standard, or stereotype that needs to be played. Whether it's being captain of the cheerleading team or the smartest kid in your class, it's one way or another that's there's going to be someone who's supposed to follow by these stereotypes or standards just for the sole fact that that's them. Unfortunately for me, it couldn't get any worse, since being an African American female who unfortunately does not fit your typical, "angry black woman." Yes, that "angry black woman", bitter, closed-off, unarticulated, with serious father issues.…

“Come to me, Sir Gwaine,” rasped the faceless hooded figure standing before me, a man cloaked in dark robes, bearing a longsword. “It is your time.” My gods, where am I? I thought, as a ghostly fog crept in, shrouding the leafless forest trees and enveloping my body. The ethereal mist chilled me to the core, making it difficult to move, difficult to reason.…

Only half an hour to go. The clicking noise of the sewing machines pounded, hammering away at the headache I always got towards the end of the day. My hands were heavier and I longed to be rid of the claustrophobic tables. “Did you hear that Violet in our building got engaged to a man in Virginia? I envy her for she plans to move with him after their marriage in the fall,” the girl sitting next to me blurted out.…

My body stirred, it was alive again! I felt the nerves from different parts of my somewhat lifeless body ignite a spark to send electrical waves with hidden messages to every limb that was present and in need of a wake up call. The minute my lids flickered to remove the sight of pitch black by processing the trashed room that looked like the aftermath of a tornado, the little clump of fear in me grew. It was all too familiar, the ruffled cream sheets, the uncomfortable pillows, the faded curtains, the fogged up windows, the smell of medicine and the unfolded green gowns that were placed messily on the metal carts that weren’t in their usual position, it all was a never-ending series of lines that never seemed to connect. I headed towards the exit of this trapped establishment, and for some odd reason, the path I was supposed to take wasn’t clear, deformed carts were scattered everywhere, broken glass that belonged to the windows laid shattered on the ground, ripped cloth that was in disproportionate sizes hung onto the metal railings and pills that were used to heal were distributed on the stained white porcelain…

I am confident that almost all of us have had to go through a deceased relatives belongings at one time or another. You know what I’m talking about- after “Uncle Edward” dies an e-mail, phone call, or letter arrives with an itemized list of his belongings and you have been invited to choose what you want among the other relative's or close friends. To be honest, I find the experience awkward and strange. My belief is that even in families with stable dynamics, this scenario has the potential to stir up emotions, and no matter how well family members get along, there will be a level of envy and bitterness that cousin Ted, brother Tom, or sister Carol walked off with the antique armoire while leaving the tin can of nuts and bolts, a hack saw with a dull blade, or a favorite rock that Uncle Ed found on a hike years ago, for the rest of the family.…

It is class night at the Wonderfully Made Foundation for those of us ladies staying in the shelter. I am nervous about class, but excited also because the ladies and staff have spoken highly of tonight’s volunteer presenter. “You are going to love Ms. LaTara” Mrs. Lisa said to me as the kids and I walked in. I thought… I don’t know about that. I’m tired and I just want to be at home or at choir rehearsal, because it’s what I’m familiar with.…

Rory came to our store and asked for me to join him in the office to discuss more, which I did. At the beginning of the conversation I again said that I was not in no way, giving a demand but I was asking for the transfer. We began our conversation again around where is all the areas that I've already covered, and where exactly is home. This began to make me defensive because I know how to lead people into conversations to get certain results I'm looking for. It's called "open ended questions".…

It's funny how more than half of my bigoted so-called friends and some of my ex coworkers of mine have finally come out the closet. I remember the good old days when it was "Hi and Whats up". In light of of the elections we've talked politics, it was fun to agree to disagree( congrats to you guys, win some lose some, that's what makes this country great, the ability to make a choice)...moving on, I seen this phrase lately...if you don't like it get out "my country" or if you don't speak the language get up and go..that tickles me the most. Some go on to claim, that I'm half of this with a little of that, I'm Irish or Italian, Greek or Jew, my girl is Hispanic or even.....drumroll, black. As I hear this it transformed me into my new alter…
