“Home is where you make it”- Joe Dirt. As a child I grew up in a country setting. We lived near small towns but not in them. I did not particularly like living in the country, so when I moved out, I chose to live in a small rural town. I like living in a small town because it seems to be safer, easier to get around, and much cheaper than big city life is.
A huge factor that determines where I live is safety, for I have two young children. In the small rural town, I live in currently we do not have gangs who sell drugs, commit home invasions or shoot people, for the closest thing to a gang in my community are the cows that herd together at the farm near the edge of town. Theft of items like iPod, money and GPS devices that had been left unattended in unlocked vehicles during the night has occurred occasionally. However, theft does not occur regularly because neighbors are often close friends or even family and watch one another’s belongings such as things they may have in the yard, vehicles and house as well. The fact that the town I live in is small also helps curve theft car theft would be difficult to accomplish because most if not all the people know what kind of vehicle each other drive so if they saw someone else driving they would most likely question it and either call the vehicle owner or the police.
I favor a minimally populated area because that’s where I have grown up. Living in a town with fewer people means commuting to work, school or the store is faster and easier because street lights are much shorter since there are fewer cars trying to get through them and traffic tie ups do not occur since there are not hundreds of people all trying to go in the same direction at once. Small towns are easy to navigate because the streets are minimal which makes directions simple and much easier to learn and

Throughout my life I have lived in three cultural distinct regions Lima Peru, White Plains New York and Baltimore Maryland. For the first two years of my life I lived in Lima, Peru and even though I never culturally adapted myself into the culture I would often visit for months and immerse myself into the culture. I can say with confidence that if I grew up in that culture I would not my be the same person I am today because of the fact that they are a collectivistic country and that would change my outlook on myself and the community around me. At around my second birthday my family and I decided to move to the United States in search of a better quality of life. I consider my hometown to be Grand Forks, North Dakota. I was born at the former United Hospital in Grand Forks in 1994, and have lived here for my entire life—with the exception of about a year spent in Walhalla, North Dakota, due to the flood of 1997. The schools that I attended while growing up are all within fifteen minutes of driving from my current house. My parents live just 6.2 miles away from me. Although Grand Forks is my city of birth, it wasn’t until I started college that I really considered it my hometown.…

People in small town communities take care of, and depend upon, each other to a greater extent. The stereotypical Bible-thumper that I was warned about, in reality, is much more helpful and a lot less judgmental than I was told. Although this close-knit type of culture can be somewhat suspicious of outsiders, and even more so for Yankee outsiders, once you get to know them, and are able to break through their own stereotypes, you both realize that we have more in common than we do…
