Personal Narrative: Hit Me Baby One More Time

Decent Essays
“I want you to come back with a diploma in your hands”, were the words of my 8th grade science teacher. The class was very boring and ordinary compared to the other classes in my middle school. My teacher, Mr. Febris, was the one who taught the science class for 5th period, but boy was I always the first one out the door when the bell rang. There were times when I would tap my pencil continuously like Britney Spears did in her “Hit Me Baby One More Time” music video. Students used to love when the teacher would call off for the day and we would get a substitute teacher, then it became a free day to just chat with our friends and play games during class. Melanie, whom was one of my childhood best friends, would make me laugh all the time.

What does your heart say? We as people do everything that someone say we should do instead of what our heart say is right. “The First Shot Fired” It all started when I went to my nephew’s birthday party at a gun club when I was 12. my nephew’s grandpa told me to bring my shotgun, so I did and when we got there he told us that he owned this gun club. After we were done eating and opening presents he told me “get your shotgun, we’re gonna see how good you are.” When I got my shotgun we went up on to the wobble stand he told me to say pull when i’m ready.…

In the article, “A New Deal for Teachers,“ by Mathew Miller, he argues that low income families with students from fourth grade through eighth grade show significantly lower tests scores compared to students from high income areas. This problem Miller addresses, is that there are not enough good teachers in poor cities, and not enough teachers willing to continue their jobs as teachers. Another argument Miller indicates is that having a good quality teacher makes a huge difference in the child’s education and overall development. Miller says that teachers, who do not care about their students and their performance, result in students doing poorly in class academics. One way to resolve these problems is to raise the wages for the teachers, but base salary upon performance and educational background.…

Having gone to two different high schools I got to experience, firsthand, just how different two schools in the same county can be. Marvin ridge and Weddington High School are completely different in their appearance, their students and their academics. Marvin was the first high school that I attended. Its nickname was " Marvin Rich". The Ridge had a certain feeling to it when you stepped foot in its doors, almost as if the air was filled with exhaust from pricey cars and cologne from name brand stores.…

For my job shadowing experience I went to Metro Charter Academy, which is a charter school in Romulus, Michigan. When I went to shadow a classmate/friend also went with me, his name is Martez Pierce. There we shadowed Bernadette Hurd, who was actually my 6th grade math teacher back in the day. Now she is a 6th grade English teacher and we observed her class and asked her multiple questions about the career in general. We also made loads of copies for her and helped her catch up on lesson plans.…

Over the past few years, enjoying my free time has been a struggle of mine and after having class discussions I learned many of my classmates had the same issue. Personally I did not feel this way much of my freshmen year, but certainly junior year and a little bit of my sophomore year I felt extreme guilt for enjoying myself and relaxing for just a second. The guilt combined with fear that unwinding for just a second would send my GPA down the drain. For instance, one time around a month ago I was watching the movie Call Me by Your Name and I was so stressed about studying during the film, that I do not remember a portion of the movie. I would be panicking when I watched TV or scrolled through instagram for too long.…

As I look back on my life as a student and educator, it is easy to pinpoint the landmarks that have brought me to the present moment, seeking the opportunity to prepare for a future career as a superintendent. However, at the time, these landmarks were not necessarily clear or even pointing towards a career in education. Upon reflection there have been very specific experiences that have provided me with a set of skills and principles that I believe will make me a successful superintendent. Most people can rattle off the names of at least one or two teachers that they remember fondly from school.…
