Personal Narrative: Hip Hop Dance Team

Improved Essays
It’s April 20th 2015, and my teammates and I are dripping sweat from doing our routine full out 5 times. Other athletes like football, softball and soccer players, wouldn’t really consider dance a sport, but believe me, it is. Training to be the worlds best will be worth the pain, tears and sweat in the end. Butterflies circle around in my stomach as I think about the plane ride to Florida! On April 25th, my team and I will take the worlds stage, to compete to become the worlds best open coed hip-hop dance team. This Monday is not a normal practice; we compete in Orlando, Florida, in 5 days. There is no joking around, cutting up or slacking one bit. My coaches, Carly and Stacey, are fussing because people aren’t doing things right, and I …show more content…
Worlds isn’t just hip-hop, there is jazz, pom, contemporary, ballet, and tap. We are the first team to compete of the day, and there our 85 teams in our division. It’s the biggest division of the competition. Being the first team to go could be a very bad thing, or a very good thing. We could set the standards high, or we will get smashed on by 84 other teams. As we prepare to take the Worlds stage, we huddle up and say a quick prayer. My heart is beating a thousand miles per hour, and I’m starting to sweat. We have finally made it to what we have been working for all season; its time to show the judges who we are. All of a sudden I hear, “and now taking the floor, in the large open coed hip-hip division, Supa Novas!” and my heart fell straight to my feet. I was so excited to finally compete, but its also Worlds which is a very stressful completion. We take the worlds stage one by one; as we look up we see our family, friends and other supporting us at the bottom of the stage, screaming at the top of their lungs. You see very bright lights, and you can barley see the judges! Its time to get in our spots and close our eyes until the music begins. I yell again and say, “we got this guys, and we can do this!” I bang on the floor one time for good luck. Cannot believe this is actually happening. The music begins, and I get into character. I scream for my teammates to go harder, and to keep going. The music stops, it is over, the …show more content…
If you’re willing to deal with the pain, tears and sweat, then you will get what you worked for. Coming from a studio, which has never won in all 9 years of competing at worlds, it’s about time we get what we worked for. You may hate the process of working hard, or going full out 10 times until it is perfect. This just comes to show that if you never give up, you will always get what you worked

Fast forward a bit to prelims night of grand nationals where we had to compete against 90 bands from across the nation who wanted a shot at a national title and an invitation to march in the 2014 Tournament of Roses parade in California. We had a late performance time on Friday and wouldn’t know the results until Saturday morning. Once we found out we made it to semi-finals we practiced more, then that afternoon we had our performance. If we were in the top twelve of the afternoon, we would earn a spot in the finals performances that night. The clarinet section found out the results from semi-finals on the bus going to finals and we had won.…

Like all children all I ever wanted was to be big and do big people things. I engaged in a few family members that I would look up to and try everything they did. I use to pretend to go grocery shopping and being a parent at times. At the age of eight, I had worn the worst pain ever and that was watching my five, year old brother getting hit by a car while trying to cross the street riding a bicycle that had a loose chain. I remember him trying to get up and get to me, but a few adults that had witnessed the accident had told him to lay down.…

I was just a little girl being bullied for having a blanket and sucking my thumb in first grade. Always left out and being told I would never amount to much, took a big toll on my grades. All throughout elementary school I was in the “special” classes.…

I was so happy I was near the front of the line because I wanted to stand out and make them remember me. While sitting there group after group kept going in it was getting close to my turn. While lined up behind these huge gray doors waiting for the judges to call us in, I didn’t think I could make it. My knees started shaking and I felt the butterflies in my stomach going crazy. Stepping on that blue mat I thought I had forgot what I had learned that week to make the team.…

Reminiscing back on the beginning of the season, I could see how terrified I had been. Although I was just in the ensemble, the pressure was still on my shoulders to perform to my best ability. Learning the dances and poses for A Thousand Cranes, I had followed the seniors exactly, right down to the way they curled their fingers or pointed their toes. I was petrified that if I did not do something precisely, I would be called out in front of the whole…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…

“Runners on your mark…Set...Poww!” Those were the last sounds I heard during what could have been my last race of my sophomore year in collegiate Track and Field. It was a frisky, yet cool Saturday in April and after a strong performance in the previous indoor and outdoor season (4x100m and 400m), I was determined to continue and uphold my strong form on this day. There is a saying that things do not always turn out the way we hope, but I believe, there is always a positive lesson to be learned from every life event. I love sports.…
