Personal Narrative: High School Women's Tennis Team

Improved Essays
Being a part of my high school women’s tennis team for 4 years has taught me how to thrive in a team environment while still growing as an individual. Tennis is an interesting sport in that even though you each play individually and accumulate a personal win-loss record, you are ultimately judged at the team level – if you don’t have a competitive team your win-loss record won’t matter because your team will be eliminated and your season will be cut short. I think this creates a unique environment where you are forced to reconcile your personal ambitions with the interests of a team and I believe this is the most important lesson that I have learned from being on this team.

Players challenge the person ranked above them and if they win they move up the ranking, if they lose, they move down. I had moved all the way up to #2 and all that was left was to challenge her for the #1 spot. I finally got the chance to prove myself but she defeated me easily. The goal I worked towards for the last few years wasn’t going to be realized. I was extremely upset but I started thinking about what it actually meant to be a “team player” and whether I was living up to that title. Everyone likes to think that they are a team player but finding myself in this situation I wondered if I really had it in me to accept defeat and move on. Holding a grudge would bring down team morale and I didn’t want to bring that negativity in. I realized I shouldn’t have to choose between the team and myself – I am a part of the team my goals should be in line with the team’s goals. I should strive to do the best that I can, but I should consider a team success to be my success as well. I can look back on this internal struggle now and confidently say that I learned a valuable lesson. I validated to myself that I do know what it is to be part of a team and that I can put my own feelings aside for the sake of a larger organization – I can truly be a team

It was a warm April afternoon. Everyone on the softball team was dismissed at 9th period (2:15 p.m.). We waited for our bus to come and take us to Upper Perk. When everyone loaded the bus, you can smell confidence in the air. As the 7th and 8th grade teams waited for their coaches and the bus, we sat and talked about how bad the hallway smelled because it was the hallway to the boy’s locker room.…

Tires crunched on the loose gravel parking lot as I was dropped off at my high school’s tennis courts on the first day of school. With my high school requiring a year of physical education, I opted to take the lifetime sport for I was nervous to compete for a spot on the highly competitive teams my school was known for. I was met at the court by 30 other freshmen with a mixed variety of expertise spanning from the first time to ever hold a racquet to a district ranked player. The district ranked player’s father, Mr. Weaver, was a sophomore chemistry teacher who happened to play tennis professionally in his heyday. Mr. Weaver volunteered to teach the freshman tennis team and to train them the basics before they were transferred to “the real…

Sweat, hard work, adrenaline. These are all things I felt in a special “moment in time” that I shared with my varsity soccer team. The team consists of many different players but the to name a couple: undefeated in the league and only lost one game so far. Our next game is against our rivals, Port Alleghany. This is where the story begins.…

Have you ever felt that all the hardwork you have put into something has been worthless? This is the exact feeling I felt when I lost my varsity spot for the 138 pound weight class on my high school wrestling team. The previous year as a freshman I had been very successful making it to state and helping my team win the state championship, but I was a 106 pounder, the lowest weight class. Over the summer I gained nearly thirty pounds, and I was now wrestling at the 138 pound weight class. I wasn't use to the weight.…

In order to have a good start and chance at winning the title we had to win the first game. Our first official game was against the hosting team, Hermon. This loss caused us to have to fight through the loser’s bracket to see who would have a chance at playing in the championship game.…

I was standing by myself on the bright green tennis court, gripping my racket. Groups of other tennis players were leaning against the chain link fence, waiting, like me, for tryouts to begin. Listening intently to the conversation going on around me, I was trying to get absorbed into what was going on. After what felt like forever, but in reality was only minutes a friend of mine and returning player walked over to me. Having not seen each other in a month or so we both greeted each other enthusiastically.…

Talking with these girls on and off the field helped me learn the individual skills, they all had to use on the field to help achieve the team goal of winning. After the season, I realized that it was a better decision for me to play on the JV team because I got a chance to play harder, to play more and to improve myself. Also I got the chance to increase my skills to meet my goal to make Varsity my senior year. Failing now makes me want to work that much harder to meet my goal as a senior and not just give up or call a quits. I believe that my failure was small in comparison to others failures, but yet again I was only a junior in high school.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

Which is more beneficial, team sports or individual sports? When comparing team and individual sports, most people do not realize how easy it is to pick out the similarities and differences the two have. Individual and team sports have the same main purpose, but the motivation, competitiveness, and life skills set them apart. In athletics, most athletes set goals for themselves, whether it is a personal goal or a team goal. It is pretty easy to set a goal, but the person setting the goal may never reach it without motivation.…
