Personal Narrative: High School Water Polo

The summer of the transition between my 8th grade year and freshman year in high school, the high school water polo team only had 7 players. That’s enough for everyone to play without a break. A friend of mine asked around if anyone would be interested in playing in the 2011 water polo season. I thought to myself about how everyone would always say “make the best out of your high school years”. “Why not?”. I had heard a lot about polo from inexperienced people. I heard it was a lot like volleyball. “Polo couldn't be that hard”. We had a while until school started and I had talked myself out of playing because 1.) I had no idea what the sport was, 2.) Swimming? I’ve never even been on a swim team, and 3.) I couldn't see me wearing one of those latex and silicone swim caps.

One day, about 2 weeks later, I went to dinner with my biological father and step siblings. I really look up to my step sister because she is making something out of herself. She is looked up to by many people and was homecoming queen her senior year. Not to mention she is beautiful! I talked to her about how I was considering on playing and why I leaned more toward not playing. She explained to me about how she swam on her school swim team her senior year just for fun. I brought up how I thought my face was too fat for a

Meaning, everyone played until they needed a break and when they needed a break, I would take their place until they recovered. Then something happened. Now, I realize this happened for the good. A member of the water polo team didn't make grades. One down and suddenly I’m a rookie starter on the Chowchilla Water Polo team. Till this day, I am still very thankful that that had happened. My freshman year was my practice year. Every day, every practice and game was a day I became a little better. I spent my sophomore year, making a bad mistake by joining the cheerleading squad. Why? I dont know. I went straight back to polo my junior

Interpersonal barrier is about how my interaction with other people such as my peers and my teacher can affect access and equality for water polo. In water polo, the competitive atmosphere is strong and there are a lot of pressure to do well. This can impact equality, as usually the still developing players have less opportunity to try because it means failing sometimes and bring the team down. According to the 3rd edition of Macmillan textbook, “If children are confident in their own abilities, then they are more likely in the future to become involved in exercise, sports and physical activities.” Figueroa’s Framework looks at equality at different levels.…

In sixth grade, I wanted nothing more than to make Lusher’s middle school flag football team. I had dreamed of being on the team from the very first day I heard about it; all of my friends were trying out with me; and we had grand plans for a year of non-contact, semi-athletic exertion ahead of us. Having been anxiously awaiting the lunch period when the team roster would be revealed, I was thusly dismayed, disappointed, and disheartened when my name was not one of the eighteen posted on the PE office door. My mother, in all her eternal wisdom, saw a way out of the pit of despair I had sunk into: Lusher was starting an Academic Games team, and she thought I might enjoy playing. I was more than somewhat hesitant; she was more than somewhat…

In high school, it can seem like the most important thing in life. I, fortunately, was involved in many other activities to fill up my time. I could not play volleyball my sophomore or junior year. This really upset me because I love the sport. Water polo is not easy for me, but that does not stop me from loving it. I started playing water polo in 9th grade, and from the moment I threw the ball I knew I had to play the sport. One of the toughest skills for me in water polo is ironically also one of the simplest: releasing for the ball. Releasing for the ball basically just means getting open for someone else to pass to you, but whenever there is someone guarding me, I panic. One day at practice my coach’s patience was waning thin.…

As a child, most kids go to a swimming class to learn how to swim and enjoy their lessons, to ultimately growing up spending days on the lake with their friends soaking up the sun kissed water. For me, this experience was a little different. I loathed going to swim class. I would beg and cry, asking my mom to take me out of the class but the feeling of being a young child who just learned to swim without floaties for the first time if a feeling I have never forgotten.…
