Personal Narrative: High School Swim

Improved Essays
I was in my sophomore year in high school and I was preparing for a swim meet on a Thursday in February. It was high school sectionals and East Noble is part of a really tough section. East Noble has a fairly small swim team and swimmers usually don’t make is past sectionals into state, at least in the past few years. It’s rare that the guys even have individuals that make it into finals. Regardless of the odds, I always have to do my best and that was what I planned on doing. I woke up that morning, took a shower, brushed my teeth, and got ready for school just like any ordinary day. I walked from class to class and did my best to stay focused in each one. The classes flew by, lunch came, and before I knew it, I was in my fifth hour class. …show more content…
I’m always nervous because I know there will be many very talented swimmers and I need to have my best swim to be able to compete against them. After a little over an hour, my team and I arrived at our destination. I saw many familiar faces from other teams since we have been friends for many years from swimming club. We conversed and soon came warm-ups. We all did our thing and shortly after warm-ups, the meet began to commence. I was a part of the first relay, which is the 200 medley and we achieved our best time and ended up making …show more content…
The 100 breaststroke. I stayed warm, stretched, and kept my headphones on as I made my way to the blocks. Next thing I knew, I was up. I took my warm-ups and headphones off and was ready to go. The official blew the whistle for swimmers to step up on the blocks. After saying, “take your mark,” the buzzer sounded and we were off. I sprinted the first 25 yards, then the second, then the third, and then before I knew it, I was on the last 25. I swam as fast as my arms and legs would take me. I finished into the wall hard and looked up at the scoreboard for my time. I saw that I had beaten my best time, which meant my swim was the fastest it had ever been. I was very proud of myself. I waited for the rest of the heats to finish and I figured out that I had sealed the last spot for the finals that following Saturday. I finished 8th and I couldn’t have been happier. I cooled down quick because I was a part of the following relay as well, the 400 free relay, and we also made it back to

Because the ninth graders were not allowed to run in this strictly middle school race, I was among the oldest in the group. This was the meet that our team had been preparing for since the beginning of the season, and I prepared even more intensely in the past few days. I had been hydrating well, eating the right foods, and even skipped swim practice the day before to rest my muscles before the meet. This had been the moment that I had been preparing for, and made sacrifices for, and doing well felt like the only option. The pressure was swallowing me up, and pulling me back to the…

Going to State for cross country is one of my favorite things that I have done in my athletic high school career. It took hard work to get there and when we finally did that it was eventful and fun and was one of the best trips that I have ever had. It started out way back in June when a group of girls got together and went for a run. At that time we only ran about 3-4 miles or so, but by the middle of the cross country season we were running up to 6 miles everyday. We trained all throughout the summer increasing our mileage every week so that by the beginning of the season were were ready to race.…

Heywood Broun said, “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” Consequently, I believe that being on my high school swim team was the one of the biggest revelations of my character. When I entered high school, I had to play a sport because it was my mom’s rule, “you will participate in minimally one sport”. As a result, my brother played football, ran track, and swam.…

Growing up, I ran from place to place because I had a patience management problem. I did not like waiting or moving unwillingly slow, but I especially did not like getting somewhere late. Thus, my choice of transportation at the time, due to age limitations, was running. In elementary school, I ran just as much as most kids and just as fast. In sixth grade, I had the opportunity to go out for the track and field team, but I did not.…

I sat down by myself and reflected. After tens of thousands of hours of devotion, swimming has become a huge part of who I am, and will no doubt shape the person I will come to be. One of the earliest lessons swimming taught me was to never give up. When I was 9, swimming taught me to fight the fatigue during lap two of a race. When I was twelve, swimming taught me to attack race two with everything I had, even if race one hadn't gone my way.…

“Runners on your mark…Set...Poww!” Those were the last sounds I heard during what could have been my last race of my sophomore year in collegiate Track and Field. It was a frisky, yet cool Saturday in April and after a strong performance in the previous indoor and outdoor season (4x100m and 400m), I was determined to continue and uphold my strong form on this day. There is a saying that things do not always turn out the way we hope, but I believe, there is always a positive lesson to be learned from every life event. I love sports.…
