Personal Narrative: Helping At The Agua Caliente Casino

Improved Essays
On Thursday, October 12th, I took the opportunity to help at the Agua Caliente Casino’s College Fair event, with the intention that I would also see the schools I intend to apply. While at the event, I saw many colleges and universities with their luring stands’ free candies, pens, and informational brochures. Overall, the schools all had something great to offer; whether it was the small class sizes or amazing student abroad programs. Although universities from as far as Hawaii to Oregon may have grabbed my attention – because of its stunning scenery and programs – I restricted my preferences to California schools. In particular, my eyes lit up when I saw UC Irvine, UC Riverside, CSU Channel Islands, – given that I’ve seen some of these see

Nichols paints the recruitment process as a frivolous experience meant to cater to a student’s every need. Nichols claims “Colleges now are marketed like multiyear vacation packages, rather a contract with an institution and its faculty for a course of educational study.” (72). This is unsound inductive reasoning on Nichols part. He does not offer sufficient evidence other than his own word or a few sporadic campus activities, very exclusive to the individual universities.…

As a student athlete at a NCAA Division II university in 2017, I have personally experienced the recruiting process and can honestly state that I would not willingly do it again. The sales pitches, tours of different facilities, paperwork, FAFSA’s, and compliance forms just to name a few definitely gave me my fill of the college admittance experience for a lifetime and then some. In Mark Edmundson’s piece, “Why Teach,” the aspects of what a true education is supposed to be is defended. Edmundson explains the change that colleges underwent in throughout the 1990’s.…

In any high school in Nevada, UNLV is seen as the “University of Never Leaving Vegas” and it is a generally accepted rule that any student with an inkling of motivation and halfway decent grades should go out of state, despite how much student debt they may end up with. After all, about 87% of UNLV’s student body is from Nevada and only around 39% of these students end up graduating within six years, and there are plenty of opportunities to make a living working on the Strip or in a casino for all those students who couldn’t quite “make it”. Meanwhile there is only a meager 13-14% of students who come to UNLV from out-of-state who have undoubtedly acknowledged all the opportunities UNLV can provide, from its status as a “High Research” University…

It was a warm summer day in Cancun Mexico. I wake up from the cries of my baby sister, Stella, as she cuddles into my mom's arms. It took a while to calm her down, but after her big tantrum, my parents, my sisters and I, made our way downstairs where the buffet was served. There, we sat down and had a huge splendid breakfast. The University of Southern California is a top notch facility with premier applicants from every corner of the world, each with something that is essential to understanding them. As for myself, I feel as if my story would not be complete without telling the tale of my rural upbringing. Coming from a modest town of 2,144 residents in northwest Indiana, my day to day experiences have been a lot different than those I would encounter in Los Angeles, California. While going from being surrounded by people who ride their donkeys to school to being surrounded by people who ride their long boards to school would be quite a culture shock, it is exactly the type of adjustment I need to transition into my adult life. Although the environment I grew…

The community of focus for the following midterm papers will revolve around my own community of Huron. Through my experience, I was one of the fortunate individuals that overcame the obstacles of poverty, racism, drugs, gangs, low self-esteem, bullying, and lack of mental support that exist within the community. Because of the obstacles, many individuals either drop out of high school, attend community college and never finish, or in some cases, follow the pipeline of attending a community college and afterwards, transfer to CSU Fresno. Much of this baffles me as I question why individuals don’t aspire to attend a four-year university outside of the Central Valley after high school or why many don’t take the challenge to apply to a UC or Ivy…

Deciding Which College to Attend One prominent problem faced by high school seniors is to decide which college to attend. This decision is very vital, as it decides not only where the student will spend the next two to ten years of his or her life, but also how well it prepares him or her for the future.
