Personal Narrative: Help The Homeless

Improved Essays
For my selfless act, I really wanted to help someone homeless. I didn’t want to give them money, who knows what they could spend it on, but food; that could save them for another 3 days. On the way to a beach, I saw a homeless man on the side of the ramp to get off of the highway. He was sitting on the floor holding a sign that said “homeless veteran”. Since the light was red, I thought it was the perfect chance to do my selfless act. I got a sandwich, a bag of chips, and a bottle of water and put my hand out of the window for him. The man had thanked us about 6 times. I don’t think he was happy but grateful. I think he was grateful that someone was willing to help. To skip a snack so that he could it for maybe the first time in days.

If we were in class and a student needed help, we were supposed to work on our work first, and let the teacher help that other student. We were taught not to pick jobs that don’t pay a lot unless we have to. People don’t act selflessly because we were taught to get something in return. In elementary, we would get candy and awards for doing good things. That soon turned into only doing good things if you get candy and awards. It’s the same way now. People will only do things if they get something in return, our minds were trained to consider, “What do I get in return?”. If you look at a lost dog flyer, there is most likely something that says “Reward” and that's why most people even read the fliers.
If children were taught at a young age that being selfless is better than being selfish, we would live in a complete world today. If we stopped considering what we’ll get in return before doing something good, we might help more people, get more things done. We’re even doing it now; we only did that selfless act to get a good grade in health

Everyday, people carry on with their lives knowing that there is both good and evil in the world. Some might distinguish the evil outweighing the good, while others spot the good outweighing the evil. Whichever side one might choose from this debate, it is natural that for humans to stop and wonder about humanity. A recurring controversy that crosses over a person's mind is whether humans are naturally and inherently good or, worse, they’re naturally and inherently evil. Society tends to lean on the idea that humans are selfish, in fact, 78% of the population believes others to be more selfish than they really are.…

In the stories of “The Devil and Tom Walker”, “The Black Cat”, and “Fences”, this remains true. Humans find themselves often caught in situations where they must choose between being honest or selfish. Many times people want more and more, regardless of the fact they might already have just enough. Whether it’s power, money, or love, people constantly want it all. The importance is understanding that when it comes to greed, it is easy to fall deep into the gallows of…

In this essay, I will defend psychological egoism as the most probable explanation for moral choice and motivation. I hold psychological egoism to be “the view that all men are selfish in everything that they do, that is, that the only motive from which anyone ever acts is self-interest” (Rachels 233). Since every action is moved by a desire to be satisfied, even in supposedly altruistic acts, one acts on a desire to satisfy one’s desire, so that supposedly altruistic acts are not actually altruistic. James Rachels, to whom my defining of psychological egoism is attributed, counters psychological egoism as incorrect moral skepticism. In the form of a Platonic dialogue, I will present, if successful, the impossibility for any ‘moral’ conduct beyond psychological egoism, counteracting Rachels own refutation in his essay, “Egoism and Moral Scepticism.”…

Many people in the world today believe that society consists of a sizeable amount of selfish beings who only care about themselves. They believe that those types of greedy people are the cause of war, death, and chaos among society. However, they are not able to see the everyday self-sacrifices that several people make in order to benefit other people and form all of humanity into a better place. They do not see the the selflessness these people have and the kind and caring acts they make in order to help others.…

My parents relocated my siblings and I from Quetzaltenango, Guatemala to San Diego, California in order to allow us to lead a prosperous future. Unlike children in Guatemala, we were presented with an excellent education in San Diego and indulged in learning. For as long as I can recall, discovering new facts and learning new things about the world fascinated me; consequently, I quickly began wanting to help others in their pursuit of learning. I was always the first to offer help to my struggling peers and would stay behind during recess to assist them. My acts were fueled by the desire to see students succeed and I would do anything to help them prosper.…

In this paper, I will argue that people who should be considered to be altruistic are those who act magnanimously to those outside of their family or general social group. I will use examples such as kin selection, animal altruism, and arguments against psychological egoism to assist in proving my thesis to be true. I will also address a counter argument made by some psychological egoists who believe that due to most people feeling pleasure while doing good things for others, that there are no people only act selfishly. I will reference James Rachel ’s essay “Psychological Egoism” to help enhance my theory that not all acts must be out of self interest.…

As stated by Julian Casablancas, “greed is the inventor of injustice as well as the current enforcer.” This quote is a great reflection of the book No Country for Old Men because of the conflict that occurs between the characters over the greed of money. But the money that the characters deal with is no piggy bank and it would make any man drool over its presence because the bag of cash has millions of dollars in it. One of the characters, Llewelyn Moss comes across this bag and risks his wife’s life and even his own in order to protect it. One of the main themes that is displayed in the novel is greed; in first world countries, it is normal for people to own a lot of things because it is advertised through media and even through each other.…

Are humans selfish or selfless? Kohn’s main assertion in his article “The Wrong Way to Get People to Do the Right Thing” is that at the basis of human nature, we are all selfish. We have incentives to be kind or charitable, whether that is to be viewed as a selfless individual or to obtain a prize or recognition. There are also incentives, such as better health and longevity, that motivate people to help one another in the community. The most critical view, in my opinion, would be the financial incentives that are acquired through trying to help others.…

Homelessness is something that has affected everyone in one way or another. Whether it be having a close relative or friend losing all they have had or having an encounter with a homeless person at a gas station. No matter who we are we all have faced homelessness more often than it should. Many have been able to get past the dirty, tattered, and shabby look homeless people have and treat them like a normal human being. Yet, a small population of individuals view homeless people as scum and treat them horribly.…

Homeless people have become an issue because they don’t know how they are going to survive the next day. When I saw the picture, it made me think about people who are homeless, and how they are going to find their next meal, and are going to find a place to sleep. I think the author wants people to think about homeless people, and the problems they are facing every day. To understand the homeless issue is finding out why, how, and how we going to solve the homeless issue. The author really wanted people to be informed about what goes with homeless people, and we should find a way to solve this issue.…

It is better to be self-interested or not? This is a question that has puzzled many philosophers for centuries. One would immediately think the answer is obvious. When as a matter of fact it is not that simple. For “self-interest” is the opposite of “selflessness”, and how does one survive in this large often-cruel world without a degree of self-interest?…
