This is it; it’s all depending on you and your bat. The pitch is thrown and it’s high, so you lay off of it. You step out for a second and gather yourself, easing the nerves.…

When we arrived at the Dreams Park it was astounding. There were baseball fields everywhere with huge bleachers, tall announcer’s boxes, dugouts that looked like they should be at a University, and grass that looked like it was cut by a barber. Since it was a national tournament there were teams from all across the country and I was in a euphoria meeting kids from all different states that loved baseball just as much as me. Since the tournament was five days long at the least, all the teams were required to stay in a cabin in the park with their teammates and coaches.…

I always sought to do the best and prove my worth as an athlete, but, that whole time, my friends never cared how fast or how slow, how strong or how weak, even how skilled or how pathetic I was. They only cared about what was truly important—having fun. Baseball never was a terrible sport for its demand of competition and athleticism. Rather, I hated baseball due to my own negative attitude towards the sport.…

It is the morning of July 4th, 2008: I groan as my mother gently whispers, “teneshi yene mar (Get up honey)”. Struggling I open my eyes and notice the trembling cabin, I turn to my mother with a look of concern and she reaches out her hand and squeezes my own looking up at me, “we are going to be okay Mar”. A couple of moments later our plane has landed, we gather up our belongings and make our way towards the exit filled with people attached to their screens and MP3 players. The airport is filled with an undercurrent of anticipation, impatience, and boredom; bodies scramble back and forth from one gate to another. My mother, attempting to balance three children, clasps my hand, holds my little brother to her waist and calls back to my older…

In life I have been told the quote, "It is our differences that make us the same." This quote did not have much connotation to me until I was in my sophomore year of high school. Throughout my childhood, my life has been nothing short of unique related to peers of my age. From the time I turned eight years old to now, I have seen my mother's mental illnesses in full effect such as her bi-polar episodes. I have seen an abuse of alcohol on an abnormal level, but I have always had my brother's back me through everything since my dad had moved to a different state and it was just us.…
