Happiness Is Not Found on a Roller Coaster

“Second thoughts? Too late. Get ready to scream!” The booming voice said over the speakers. Everyone around new this meant another car was about to take off for an intense ride on the timeless roller coaster, California Screamin'. In just a few seconds they would be off, gone to travel over the track in a bright blur. The screams enclosed the car with the force of adrenaline as it appeared and disappeared in a flash. I heard the happy and terrified screams of the people on the coaster and the booming voice of the ones controlling it while strolling around Paradise Pier in Disneyland with my family. At this point, I hadn't been on the roller coaster yet. I preferred to keep myself on the ground and not on the coaster going up side down into crazy drops. My parents however, really wanted to go on so they left me with my nine year old brother Ryan. Ryan and I headed towards the dock and waited for our parents' car to come by. After a couple of minutes, an orange car with twenty-four seats came around the corner and stopped as usual. My parents loaded into the third seat back. I saw the cloudless blue sky. I saw the Ferris wheel moving up and around, allowing its riders to look across the park. I saw families walking around together; laughing, eating, and smiling. I watched as the coaster went around the loop, accompanied by more screams. I saw the Tower of Terror in the distance, knowing people were on that ride right now screaming and falling in the dark. That only made me laugh harder. I remember the feeling of exhilaration, as the world was so happy and bright, so unlike anywhere else. It was an innocent joy that bounced off the water and made you

A few years ago, on a class trip, my friends had asked me to ride at least one roller coaster. It was not a large roller coaster, but it made me queasy just looking at it. I was confident that I would be able to go on and enjoy the experience. My confidence quickly evaporated when we began climbing up the roller coaster’s first hill. The ride dropped, and I was screaming so loudly that I could only hear myself.…

I remember the gut wrenching feeling in my stomach as my best friend and I approached the tallest and fastest roller coaster at Hershey Park, called SkyRush. I am not sure why I agreed to go on this roller coaster, considering most of the time at amusement parks I entertain myself with food, and miniature rides that stay level to the ground. Unlike me, my friend liked the rush and heart dropping feeling of being at the apex of a roller coaster and then dropping down at maximum speed. Personally, I preferred the ground, where I remained in full control of my own safety. Yet that afternoon I found myself standing in line for SkyRush.…

However, just as I said this the spiritless roller coaster attendant strapped me in permanently ensuring I couldn’t back out. After the attendants strapped everyone in, they did their whole spiel on how we were going to have a great time, but the words muddled in my mind as I was more focused on breathing. The car moved onward and screeched at us as if in warning. Then suddenly the car stopped, I’m pretty sure just to spite us.…

I had never had so much fun with obnoxiously loud carnival music blasting in my ears, small children stupidly goofing off in front of me, and the smell of food that was so greasy it made my stomach turn. Things that usually gave me a migraine, now made me intoxicated on my own cheerfulness. However, everyone knows that all good things must come to an end. Shortly after my dad and I had exited the carousel, it was time for us to leave the park.…

Seven years ago, my friends and I went to an amusement park and like any other young child, I couldn’t wait to ride every single rollercoaster there was. I loved each one, irrespective of the number of loops it had or how fast it went. However, this changed when I got on one called the drop-tower. As the name suggests, it was a monstrous tower that carries riders up in a gondola to the top of the tower and then suddenly the gondola drops down. In seconds, it dropped me 100 feet down in the air, as I heard the echoes of a hundred-people screaming.…
