Hands, pull, tuck, perfect! As Molly gets prepared to throw her pass I’m confident she’ll nail it. You can tell how nervous she is just by her face, she’s waiting for the perfect moment. As she’s getting in her zone I sit back and relax, I don’t know how but I could just tell she was ready. Now I’ve been in the cheer industry for a while, I’ve seen plenty of cheerleaders come and go. They see me as just a cheer mat but I see them as amazing cheerleaders, I would give anything to have legs and arms so I could tumble around. Now don’t get me wrong I love what I do but sometimes I get a little jealous. Alright back to Molly, she looks back behind her one last time and she goes for it. She had a pretty back handspring, her legs were straightened

“Tuck and roll” that’s what they say when jumping off or out of a moving vehicle but that didn’t work for me. I was about five years old, I was visiting my grandparents that I hadn’t seen in a while. I was riding with my dad on a four wheeler and I was having fun until I felt the four wheeler jump, and then I turned around to see my dad jumping off. That was when I got scared. I tried to drive it, but with my family, chasing and yelling for me to jump off it was hard to do.…

As human beings, it is only natural to judge people who are different than ourselves. Most often these judgements are based off of common beliefs, or stereotypes. Stereotypes apply to every group, from the elderly to lively cheerleaders. Most often, these beliefs do not describe everyone in a group. Cheerleaders are one group that has many, many stereotypes.…

The entertainment business is making millions of dollars basing characters on generalized stereotypes. The stereotypical cheerleader, I was not but when I heard the rumble of the crowd and felt the team spirit I knew I wanted to be a part of it all. After taking some time to look beyond the surface I realized that cheerleading was not all about the tight uniforms and shiny pompoms. Cheer is a sport that requires teamwork, trust, dedication, commitment, and optimism.…

There is No I in T E A M A lot of the time cheerleaders are stereotyped as stuck up, pretty girls, with the mindset of being better than everyone else, well that is not always true. Being pretty is not only an outside appearance but, it is also the attitude you portray when dealing with others at Maumelle High School taught me a valuable lesson. I was on a team of twenty four girls and a hand full of them always wanted the spotlight.…

The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

Being let go can be many things, it can be cut from a team, laid off, or rejected. For me, being cut was a shock and a huge disappointment. I tried out for the Bridgewater State University men’s soccer team and was dismissed in the second round of cuts. Soccer is not just a game for me, it is a significant part of my life. I have played year round for the past fourteen years both indoors and outdoors.…

Chop It All Off Two years ago, I had long, luscious, golden blonde hair that fell down to my waist, and I absolutely hated it. Everyone else seemed to love it, though, so I kept it. I dealt with the static, the lengthy drying time, and the hours of styling that I had dealt with ever since I was little, all because I wanted to be loved and accepted. I wanted to fit into the box of typical girls my age who all had the exact same haircut so that I would be considered “pretty” by the rest of my classmates, but I felt miserable in that box and I didn’t know how to escape.…

While preparing to attend Utah State University or the college of your choice, male prospective students should consider trying out for the Spirit Squad. For male High School athletes, who have a desire to continue being a part of a team sport, cheerleading would be a great choice for them. One great incentive to being a part of the Spirit Squad is that it does offer a scholarship that will help pay your college tuition. In cheerleading, males need to maintain a certain physical fitness level to help them stay in shape and to achieve stunting and tumbling goals before performances. Because of this, male cheerleaders need to be strong to tumble and stunt with their assigned partners and should entice them to want to be a part of a spirit squad.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

Do you know someone who gets fired up when someone says that cheerleading is not as much of a sport as football? Well that’s because cheerleaders just want to be recognized as the athlete they truly are. Cheerleading has been overlooked as a sport for many years. People believed that cheerleaders have been just a support system for the real sports. Despite what people may think, cheerleading is just as much as a sport as football because it requires strength, coordination, and skill.…

Cheerleading has always been a very important aspect to my life. In high school our cheerleading squad had an experience that proved cheerleaders do not get the respect from other athletes that they deserve. As a cheerleading squad, we were at every football and basketball game, even the away games. We were there to show support for our fellow athletes, however when our squad was in a cheerleading competition, not one of the other athletes came in support of us. This showed the lack of respect other athletes had for our cheerleading squad.…

Things can change from passions to obsessions in the blink of an eye. When I started cheerleading in 9th grade, I fell deeply in love with it. Many things drew me towards it: the family I received, the idea of working hard to succeed, and simply the feeling of pure ecstasy when we hit a stunt or the team crushed a dance. I became very devoted, and soon it consumed my whole life.…

It is 3:30 in Wichita Kansas. My last class just ended and I am currently changing to go to cheerleading practice. I attend Heights High School which is not a school that is familiar with mediocracy. Almost every sports team including basketball (men’s and women’s), football, wrestling, and even bowling at Heights High School had been winning state championships so of course our cheerleaders could not be any different. Heights high school cheerleader had been known around the city for being exceptionally good.…

In life there are many stereotypes that influence our opinions and what we believe more than they should. When you hear about high school cheerleading many people think of a bunch of airheads in short skirts that smile all the time. What society fails to realize is that things are not what they seem. When looking from an outside perspective the true reality can be faded and hard to come by. As much as I hate to admit it, before I started cheering I was one of those people who thought cheerleaders were just really loud girls that wanted they played a “sport”.…
