Through my high school, Multicultural Club, we have a partnership with Habitat for Humanity in helping them rebuilt neighborhoods. I have participated in my junior and senior year in high school to help Habitat for Humanity in joining hands building a home for a warming family. As well as, painting, cleaning, and organizing a welcome home moment for the Lor family—who was the family that we helped out with Habitat for Humanity. Additional, after graduating from high school, I still help out with the Multicultural Club in participating in building a neighborhood in hands with Habitat for Humanity, once more. I plan to help out more in the future, and is excited in joining hands with Habitat for Humanity. Nonetheless, I have also part-taken in fundraising activities for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) with the Multicultural Club. Throughout this fundraising experience, I have learned a lot about the intense work it takes in achieving something greater than life. Physically, I have grown to understand the simple things in life, and how much or how little it takes to change someone’s life and my life. Mentally, I am prepared in helping out further because by giving something, I receive something, as well. The impact it has on the Multicultural Club and myself is immense because I have shaped all of us in any shape or form from going beyond our limits in achieving something of value for ourselves and for others. Through these involvements it has impacted us that doing little things in life makes a massive impact on others and ourselves; which is a feeling that worth a

Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

Wes Moore had a lot of caring friends with big hearts that had determination and drive to helping others. His friend started a clothing company to help single, low income mothers by providing an income for their families by making apparel for the company American MOJO. I think our university community can learn a lot from this and contribute by hosting a clothing or shoe drive for our local families. We could do this by donating our clothes or shoes to individuals that are less fortunate or lower income that can’t provide for their families like they would like to. Another story that Mr. Moore shared with us was about his Veteran friends John and Dale and how they started building homes for disabled service Veterans.…

My residential community has had a great impact on me. The community provides an ideal atmosphere to meet a variety of people. Not only does the residential community promote diversity and inclusion, but it has also granted me the unique opportunity of leading in a college atmosphere. After arriving at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I started spending most of my time in the lobby because my room did not have air conditioning. While in the lobby, I met a racially and geographically diverse group of people.…

Volunteering is an essential part of this world. Every day, millions of people around the world struggle with many problems such as: poverty, hunger, homelessness, etc. Without people volunteering to help solve these issues, what would the world be like? Although there are many existing organizations that help with these issues, such as Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels, one that I have found an interest in is Habitat for Humanity. They are a non-profit volunteer association that works together to build reasonably priced homes for people all over the world.…

Throughout my life, I have been the victim of several burglaries. At the age of seven, someone, in broad daylight, broke into our house and shot my dad in the chin. I was displaced to my aunt's house for weeks and missed most of my 1st grade year. When I was seventeen, I walked in on my home being robbed by some local kids. They were upstairs when I came into the house and escaped through a window, but the idea that I could have come home earlier still haunts me.…

Having a community where you can lean back on is one of the most important things that I have had in my life. The community I have always been involved in is sports but the one that impacted me the most was a community called drop-in soccer. The nonprofit organization that I have chosen for my research project is Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI). There are many credible nonprofit organizations but Habitat for Humanity is the only one that I have ever worked for and truly enjoyed my time there. It does not hurt that I believe in their mission, vision and principles. HFHI’s mission is “Seeking to put God’s love into action Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope” (Habitat for Humanity, 2017). HFHI’s vision is “A world where everyone has a decent place to live” (Habitat for Humanity, 2017).…
