Personal Narrative: Gymnastics

Improved Essays
My whole life I’ve done one thing: Gymnastics. I fell in love with the sport in a preschool class at the YMCA when I was 2 years old. I haven't stopped doing gymnastics since; I practically grew up in the gym. My life has consisted of blood, sweat, and chalk for 15 years and counting. I have always loved the challenge of driving myself to do skills that seem crazy and even impossible. I love flying through the air, defying gravity and feeling like I am unstoppable. Gymnastics is tough; it requires self-discipline and hard work. It forces me to push past the limit both physically and mentally. This sport has taught me determination, commitment, time management, perseverance, and how to be a leader and part of a team. This one sport has been …show more content…
After practicing 20 hours a week, I know the kinds of sacrifice it takes to achieve your goals. Gymnastics has taught me how to be determined to train hard for what I want to accomplish. I’ve learned how to work through frustrations and persevere through trying circumstances. Gymnastics is all about being as perfect as you can be. However, in this particular sport, that is nearly impossible. In gymnastics, you do the same skills over and over again until you finally achieve it. Sometimes it takes years of training just to be able to perform a single skill! That being said, you can imagine how frustrating it is to be training as hard as you are and still coming short of perfection. Because of this, I have learned to never give up. Even when things are tough and I feel like I’m never going to achieve my goals, I’ve learned to persevere until I eventually succeed. I have had to be fully committed to this sport. In the end, it’s always worth it. I have won three YMCA National Championship titles, a state title, and countless other all-around and event titles. However, even if I hadn’t succeeded in my career, the experience of competing and the lessons I’ve learned have been

I just want to bring perspective to why I decided to form a team, and why it has been so successful for me and my teammates. In this sport, unless you have lived it yourself, no one else can ever truly appreciate the lows and highs, the sacrifices, the mood swings, the doubts , the fears, the anxiety, the pleasure, the intensity, and the list go on, of what we as competitors go through in preparation for the “big day”! We are in an elite group of people that most do not, and cannot, understand. So, to have a team of girls that truly “get it”, is something that I have grown to love and cherish. It is a sisterhood that supports each other and lift each other up.…

Reflecting on my years as a member of the Silver Starlites I realize I would not be where I am today if it were not for the influence of my parents, teammates, Starlite parents and my four magnificent coaches, who surprisingly managed to put up with my antics for ten years. It is because of their encouragement and support that I have truly learned what it means to be disciplined, audacious, dedicated, a role model and most importantly a champion. Our competitions came around two and occasionally three times a month, this meant that if I were not home doing my school work I was sure to be in the gym practicing my butt off while my mom repeatedly nagged about how bad my free hand was or that my showmanship and eye contact was not enough, not to mention her eye rolls every time I dropped. It was excruciatingly frustrating to know that it…

I spent countless hours in a sauna with a plastic suit, ran so many miles on my treadmill, not even to mention all the hours we spend in practice. At the end of the year I got second place at my district and qualified for the state tournament. I went into the state tournament not expecting to place, but had dreamed of placing at this tournament since I started wrestling. I lost my first match, then wrestled back and strung together two consecutive wins to place 8th. Although, I wasn’t a state champ, I accomplished one of my lifetime goals.…

Competitive gymnastics is a team sport, and within that team there are leaders. Growing up, I was one of those leaders. I was someone who the younger girls on the team could look up to, I inspired them to work hard so that when they were older they could be leaders as well. I taught them the value in hard work, determination, and commitment. I was always a shoulder to lean on, my ears open for anyone.…

As cliche as it might sound, it is true. Often, your success as a gymnast is a measurement of how hard you have worked. Simone trains 32 hours per week and advises to always go to gym with a mindset to “train harder”. Commit to training, stay focused and persist in every move you make, every flip you…

It seemed as if I would cause mayhem every time I moved a muscle. I never could find a way to stay idle. Fortunately, my parents found a way to channel my excess energy; they enrolled me in taekwondo classes. This was the first step into my athletic history, from that point on I continued to participate in volleyball and basketball. Although I was given the opportunity to expose myself to different sports, there was also the issue of exposing myself to different injuries.…

Being a gymnast was not only about making flips and turns it was something more than that. It came with its challenges, but it was something unforgettable. Having been a competitive gymnast for ten years not only showed me how to be a part of a team, but it showed me something greater which is work ethic. When I was in gymnastics I learned that you will have to work with people that you necessarily do not get along with. You sometimes will have to be a part of a team and you may not like someone in it.…

And in all that we do, we learn by making these mistakes and by failing. In most sports, the process of learning can be intimidating and tedious, but it's rather uneventful. You miss a shot or strike out, but it’s not scary per se. In gymnastics, however, making a mistake can have serious consequences and result in a serious injury. In that respect, gymnastics is unique in that there is always the potential for getting hurt.…

To be involved in a sport and more importantly a team has meant more to me than I would have ever guessed. Initially joining the sport I thought it would be fun to spend time with my preexisting friends but later on I found myself caring for people I had not known before. Being in a group that you work together and share the same goals with creates a bond that differs from peers that you sit with in a class. It is really nice to be in a group that you care for, knowing that they in turn care for you as well is very humbling and it is a great feeling to…
