Personal Narrative: Gun Control Reform

Improved Essays
When I was 14 years old, and a freshman in high school, I took a stance. This stance was controversial at the time, but is something that I believe in ever more strongly today. This stance was on gun control reform. I wrote a bill and presented it to the Minnesota State Legislature.
I wrote this bill shortly after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings. My bill primarily addressed limitations on the type of gun and more stringent background checks, including restrictions on mentally ill. I did a lot of research when making determinations of what to include and exclude from the bill. I thought for the most part it was reasonable common sense gun control reform. However, while lobbying, I found out that there were legislators and other lobbyists that were very passionate on the other side of the issue. I received emails and phone calls from people that were clearly angry and upset by what this bill was trying to accomplish.

I have a brother who suffers from mentally illness and I saw many of the traits of Adam Lanza, the Sandy Hook shooter, in my brother. He is one of the nicest people I know. However, with the condition he suffers from, he has extreme mood swings. He can go from the happiest person in the world, then become extremely mad and extremely violent out of nowhere, then once he calms down become very apologetic for what he had just done. There were a number of times that he threated to hurt himself, hurt us, and would physically come after us. As a family, we had to make escape plans, and lock up and hide anything that could be used as a weapon, including knifes from the kitchen and tools from the garage. Because of this, I grew up learning how to protect my

Gun control is a topic that always interests me mostly because our government is absolutely ignorant when it comes to the topic. Following the night club shooting in Orlando this summer, democrats proposed an idea that would keep guns out of terrorist reach. However, this wouldn’t only keep guns out of the reach of terrorist, but citizens of the United States as well that are legally allowed to own and carry a firearm thanks to the second amendment. I believe a lot of these standstills could be solved if one side was smart enough to not take away a human’s constitutional rights. It is no surprise that this issue ended in a gridlock.…

Things are now changing drastically and it makes me furious. Now that mentally ill people are allowed to purchase guns, these people are rethinking their statements. Obviously, before this law was made people were using guns in the wrong way, but now we will have more people buying guns and not knowing what to do with them so they will use them the wrong way. Not only does this make me angry, but it scares me because at on any given day I could end up in a situation where something bad occurs because in many mass shootings that have occurred, innocent people die that don’t deserve to and I would prefer to not be one of…

Gun control has been a reoccurring issue in the Unites States for some time now. According to Paul Rosenzweig in his article, Guns: A Loaded Argument, he suggests that the issues related to gun control hardly has to deal with the amount of regulation, but more with how much power the government has to regulate individual conduct, which in his writing expresses that it should be fairly limited. Rosenzweig supports his claim by first saying that most people agree with some type of regulation on gun control whether they are for or against the issue. He also goes on to state, “Everyone agrees with some reasonable bounds, the government can and should regulate who owns which types of weapons.” Although he does agree with some regulation, he also believes that all American citizens have the right to own their own weapons.…

What would the typical American do at a gun point robbery? It was pass 7pm and the sun was dripping behind the hills, and the clouds were red like a pink lady apple. I heard the sound of the cars pass at super speeds right as I pulled to a gas station. I had to stop to get pain reliefs, due to my low tolerance for shoots from vaccines that were required for college. The pain that I was feeling before the gas station was certainly not worth the next 10 minutes that determine my future.…

Have the shootings in America gone too far? Even sending children to school isn't safe anymore. The United States is one of the top countries with the most public shootings and that needs to stop now! According to the University of Alabama, 31% of public mass shootings happen in America alone. “Gun control is set by laws or policies regulating sales, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms by civilians” (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives).…

With all the gun related violence and school shootings that have happened lately in the United States there has been a lot of talk about whether or not there should be a gun reform. Some people argue that there should be a gun reform with stricter gun laws in order to prevent more gun related violence and crimes from happening. Some others believe that a gun reform is not necessary. They believe that stricter gun laws would cause more gun related violence. The United States should put a gun reform in place that includes stricter gun laws, better regulations, better regulations on gun permits, and restricts the type of guns available to the public.…

In terms of the issue of minimum wage, I, Lisa Murkowski believe that the minimum wage should not increase. Therefore, I am not in favor of The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2015 (H.R. 2015/ S. 2015), which will increase the minimum wage to $10.10. However, in cases where the federal minimum wage does not increase a lot, I am in favor of it. On the other hand, in terms of the issue of guns, I am opposed to The Secure Communities Act of 2015 (H.R. 1547/ S. 1547). What this law will do is require criminal background checks for all online gun purchases and for all firearm purchases at gun shows.…

When I received the Argumentative Letter as an assignment, I was dissatisfied by the strict structural requirements of the assignment. However, I soon realized that these requirements placed actually made it easier for me to start writing my paper, something I usually have trouble doing. Some other positive attributes of the assignment were being able to write about gun control, a topic I feel strongly about, and learning how to properly and politely argue with someone. There were several aspects of the Argumentative Letter I found particularly challenging or easily accomplished. One of the more challenging parts of writing this letter was finding acceptable arguments to support gun control that I had proper evidence to refute.…

Guns are constitutionally guaranteed to law-abiding citizens, under the right to “keep and bear Arms, [which] shall not be infringed” (2nd amendment). You introduced the S.150 Bill, in 2013, to ban assault weapons, “to ensure that the right to bear arms is not unlimited” (GOP 2013), but it does go against our constitutional rights. My family are responsible gun owners, under their 2nd amendment rights. By you trying to completely ban guns and further support the ideal on gun control, you are going against their rights. My cousin, currently lives in North Carolina, and has a gun permit due to high crime rates of home invasions.…
