Growing with Compassion and Learning through Nursing By Tina-Nicole Butler, RN Compassion is defined as “to have pity or concern for one’s sufferings and/or misfortunes.” I believed I have instilled this trait ever since I can remember. I always played nurse or doctor as a child. I was that child that would bring every sort of specimen to others to see if you we could help them be safe and well. As I grew older my compassion to help grew more. I often would assist other classmates when they were in need. This carried on into high school. At this time I was enrolled in an outreach ministry course. We traveled to Ecuador for 10 days. We assisted in building and painting schools for the poor stricken Duran, Ecuador. They never expected to get anything from us. The next stop was nursing school. What a journey this would be. I think this is when I realized how much a person can need compassion in there life. Actually seeing sick patients, and learning that a little piece of compassion goes a long way. Every little hello to a little lotion on an aching back can change the pace of a whole day. While working as a transporter when I started nursing school, I would talk to the patient to see how they where doing. Then working as a nursing assistant while in school, I would always check on the patients day to see if there is any way I could help. I grew a lot in this time. My compassion for others was growing stronger. My next Career change was a rehab tech II I got this job as I was getting ready to graduated nursing school. I worked at a rehab hospital. It was a tough unit. Every thing from burns to cardiac pts are what I cared for. I learned to care for the pt. as well as the family here. I learned you need to look at the whole situation, not just what is before your eyes. When I graduated, I then work here as a RN. I then grew some more, and was asked to work in RI at the
