Personal Narrative: Growing Up With An All-State Trumpet Player

Decent Essays
Growing up with an All-State trumpet player, my dad, I received an early education in music. Whether it was classical or rap, rhythm always flowed throughout my house. I have been a lover of many genres of music since the age of three. When given a chance to produce music myself, naturally I took it.

I practiced whatever music my teachers, at school and in private lessons, gave me and even songs I wanted to learn. However, in middle school, my drive to play the violin plummeted. It became challenging to balance practice after school with more homework and extracurriculars. In sixth grade, I quit. Violin had become a chore; I had a certain number of hours

I have always loved music. It started around nine years ago when I started playing piano. Piano was an instrument that my sisters and mom played and I was fascinated by the sounds that it could make and how you could make songs your own. Fourth grade I played violin but it wasn’t my thing because I could not find the thrill that the piano gives me when I play.…

Music has played a gigantic role in defining who I am. When I was little I was always involved in music. Even if it was not me making the music, I was always bopping my head along or tapping my foot to the beat of the music. My parents were surprised to find out that I was the child that was fascinated by the marching band walking in the parade. I knew by a young age that I wanted to be in that band.…

I was in awe how cool the music sounded and wanted to do the same thing. Get the same instrument no matter what; that’s probably what I thought. Of course, it never happened and I went on with my life. It was just 7 years ago that I was choosing what to play for the first time, I guess you could call that fate. Out of all the instruments that I tried out, the violin was the only thing I made a…

I started my musical career out at an early age. Starting my first fellowship in elementary school in the fifth grade by playing the flute and getting instructed by one of the best band instructor’s ever Mr. Hartz. But before moving on to the flute every little person played their first instrument which was the recorder where we played in the fourth grade. At this time music wasn't as advanced and the songs we played included lullaby type of songs including Mary had a little lamb, Hot Cross buns, and many more. Since I played band in elementary school starting from the fifth to the eleventh grade, I’ve been real accustomed to all musical aspects.…

It was a bad choice. After playing violin for five years at that time, and going back and relearning the basics I learned four years ago, music can get boring. I was extremely glad that fourth grade was over, and I looked at what I wanted to play for fifth grade. This year, I still wanted to play violin because IPSF (Irvine Public School District) would be making (as for the last thirty years) an Elementary Honors Chambers/Orchestra. I was extremely nervous when it was time for the audition.…

It still does.…

Whether it was my young self having the desire to play the violin or simply me being obstinate in not listening to adults, it’s a wonder to realize that what defines me today is all due to my younger self refusing to give up. Despite my determination, it became clear to me that my passion for the violin was not matched by the effort that I was putting into the instrument. As part of my instruction on the violin, I participated annually in ASTACAP-American String Teachers Association Certificate Advancement Program. Until…
