Personal Narrative: Growing Up In The Valley Of Reno Nevada

Growing up in the Valleys of Reno Nevada the weather can be unexpected and terrible from the summer rainstorms to the whiteout winter in five feet of snow. There are a lot of power outages that I have encountered, knowing how to start a fire and get some kind of heat and light was imperative to my family.

My mom was always prepared. On the counter top in the corner of our bathroom always sat a dusty odd looking glass kerosene lamp that was always topped off with smelly kerosene. Though we didn’t need it very often it was always there waiting for those power outages. We also had flashlights and batteries back stocked. Along with that there were the candles that I was infatuated with. I must have had 30-50 candles around.

Fire starting is definitely one of the more important things when it comes to survival. I am going to give you a few products to think about having around the house that will help you in a bug in or bug out situation.

Emergency Fire Starter
This is a very cheap and simple flint that is used to create a spark on small tinder. You can use this over and over to create that spark and start a fire.

Waterproof Matches
This box set contains 40 water proof matches that are dipped in wax. They are very durable and easy to light on the side of the box. The produce a better flame then regular matches because the wax also acts as fuel to the flame allowing the flame to burn a little longer.

Fire Starter Kit
I really like this product because it gives you more then one option to choose from when starting a fire. The best part is that it is very simple with only five items that are vital to starting a fire.

1 box of Waterproof matches
1 flint
1 tinder capsule with 5 cotton balls (added Vaseline or Lighter fluid)
1 Water proof
