It wasn’t like the 9th Ward in New Orleans, Louisiana, but it was enough for me to grow up in a close knit family and a community environment that became personal among several classmates, church members, and school teachers. Also, at times, living in the hood became a nightmare. Always around 12 mid-nights, you could hear gun shots blasting like police sirens. The only difference was, there were no sound of police sirens ever after theses random shots blasted the mid-night air. Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

Growing up in Skokie, Illinois and going to arguably one of the most diverse high schools in the nation, Niles West, I have grown up with people of all different backgrounds and cultures. I was not even aware of our school’s diversity until I visited my cousin’s graduation ceremony in Geneva, Illinois. According to illinois-demographics.com, Geneva has a 90.9% white population. In contrast to this, Skokie has a 65.6% white population. He seemed to be the only Asian-American that I saw that day, and really stuck out.…

As a young armadillo growing up in Texas during the 1820s, my life was peaceful and happy. The Federalists who held power in Mexico left me, my fellow armadillos, and the Anglo Americans alone to enjoy and work the land. However, in 1829, the Centralists gained control of the Mexican government and the freedom we enjoyed gradually eroded. As the Mexican government imposed more regulations on the Anglo Americans, the tension which had existed between the two groups due to the Nacogdoches land grant, become even more palpable.…

Growing up in Brooklyn, in the early 90’s was one of the best experiences in my life. I remember the ice cream trucks, corner stores, fire hydrates being opened for the kids especially when there was a block party but most of all, the unity of families and neighbors. Many people will say “Brooklyn, only the strong survive” and I have lived by that phrase my entire life. It showed me the beauty of living in one of the boroughs that makes up New York City and has taught me to be a strong person. It’s not made for the weak.…

I live in the “ghetto,” or at least that’s the notion I received when I first moved into my neighborhood. The houses are old and it’s never quiet, I sleep with my sister in a small bedroom, getting up early every morning and seeing the drunken people from last night’s parties. The challenges I faced on a daily bases was the low income me and my family had to survive on. My parents worked day and night just to get food on the table and pay the bills. I knew that this wasn’t the life I wanted.…

I have felt many pressures, race is such a big problem among black people but as community can get over the hump of being pressured into a few stereotypes. From my own personal experience being a young black man growing up in many places of black being the majority such as Detroit, Chicago, New York I felt an amazing amount of comfort around these areas. Once I move down to La Vernia Texas, being enrolled into an all white school with a lot of Mexicans and the only black people could only fit on a bench in a hallway that we called “The Black Bench” in high school, I attended La Vernia school district for 7 years from 4th grade all the way to 10th grade in high school.
