Personal Narrative: Growing Up In Penny, Oklahoma

Great depression storyline Growing up in Penny, Oklahoma was difficult. As a young girl I constantly moved from place to place. We were never able to afford one months pay, so we would move every month. I became accustomed to it. The mystery of where we went next would fascinate me. In my childhood, we always found something to do. I didn't go to school very often because we constantly moved, but I loved reading books. I began to learn how to cook and perform daily women duties. When I was six, my parents decided that learning how to run the family business would be a good idea. I would watch them for hours, learning, and doing what they taught me. My mom was my best friend and my rock. Anytime anything seemed difficult she would pull out her bible and pray. I admired her a lot. She molded my character and who I wanted to become. …show more content…
We had just opened a store and I began going to school. We were somewhat stable, or at least I thought. One day, I saw my parents fighting and all three of us kids went inside to begin packing our stuff already knowing what would happen. But this time it was different. We had completely run out of food, and I hadn't seen my older brother go to work in two weeks. It had been decided that we would be moving to California. I was bitter, I had just settled down to call someplace home and we were moving once again. It devastated my life, but we had no choice. On July, 2 1935 we began our journey to California. I remember packing my grandma’s broach, because of her recent passing before our journey. My little bag only held so much so I had to carry only the necessities. My family in total only had 6 bags. Our car was set and prepared to journey to California. The mystery of the unknowing scared me for once. It was different this time. It was a reality that we could starve or not find
