Personal Narrative: Growing Up In New York City

Improved Essays
Growing up in New York City has been a wonderful and challenging experience. This city offers so many opportunities to its residents, but tapping into those resources proves to be a challenge all its own. When everything seems both immensely important and incredibly useless, a mentor or person willing to guide one through the academic process can make the difference between excellence, mediocrity, and failure. I am who I am because there were teachers, no matter how few, willing to help me connect the dots and come to realizations that I otherwise would not have come to. I want to help create that same opportunity for other students who may feel lost or confused by everything vying for their energy and attention. I prefer to teach either English

One experience that shaped my character as a person was my part-time job in high school. I worked as tour guide in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Being a tour guide pushes a person to be open minded and curious about other people. I remember having a tour group from New York City, and we had a great conversation when we were comparing our respective Chinatowns. The conversation had me continuously think of questions and reply to their question with an answer to the best of my ability.…

Growing up is tough. Every day people go through life with careers that they may not enjoy. Throughout the past few weeks I got the opportunity to interview two people about their jobs, one being a young adult who just started working, while the other was approaching her mid-life with an established career. The advice from both of these individuals was both eye opening and helpful. The age of the interviewee definitely influenced the responses I received.…

New York otherwise known as the “Big Apple” is home to approximately 19.7 million people. In a closer lense, New York City is home to 8.4 million people. Everytime I go to New York I always spot the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center. For seven summers I went to Camp Matoaka in Maine, each year I would return to the same smiling faces. These familiar faces were always close to my heart, however they were not always in reach.…

Our field trip to Chicago offered me a new way of seeing the city. I have been to Chicago multiple times, yet this trip offered me an experience I was not expecting. It offered me an insight to the darkness that covers the city and the beacons of light that try to shine through that darkness. It opened my eyes to those who are searching for a truth, a love and an acceptance and are finding it in so many different places; whether it is Jesus People USA, South East Friendship Center, Olive Branch, a Krishna Temple or an Islamic Mosque. In each of these places individuals are just trying to figure out where they belong and if they can find acceptance, but what each offers is entirely different.…

It was hot and humid. I was a stranger from the other side of the Earth. I had never been in Atlanta before. The only thing that I knew about Atlanta was 1996 Olympic Games through TV. I was not sure how long I was going to stay here and what to do for living.…

Growing up in Brooklyn, in the early 90’s was one of the best experiences in my life. I remember the ice cream trucks, corner stores, fire hydrates being opened for the kids especially when there was a block party but most of all, the unity of families and neighbors. Many people will say “Brooklyn, only the strong survive” and I have lived by that phrase my entire life. It showed me the beauty of living in one of the boroughs that makes up New York City and has taught me to be a strong person. It’s not made for the weak.…

I am a person with ambiguous dreams where I hope I can solve all issues in the world. However, I can not do it all at one time. I started out small by giving back to the community where I grew up and still continue to spend my time in there: Chinatown. Even though I do not know much about China, I get to learn a little about their culture through their architectural buildings, delicious cuisine, and my family members living there. Chinatown has been run down and not been acknowledged by tourist or Chicagoans, so I want to bring that sense of community.…

I live in the “ghetto,” or at least that’s the notion I received when I first moved into my neighborhood. The houses are old and it’s never quiet, I sleep with my sister in a small bedroom, getting up early every morning and seeing the drunken people from last night’s parties. The challenges I faced on a daily bases was the low income me and my family had to survive on. My parents worked day and night just to get food on the table and pay the bills. I knew that this wasn’t the life I wanted.…

It all begun when I was quite physically, pushed through the birth canal located right here in Berkeley, California. Alta Bates Hospital was where my lovely mother gave birth to a girl. A short period of time following my birth, my family and I relocated across the bridge to San Francisco. The foggy, eccentric city is where I spent, and still spend, my life.…

I have felt many pressures, race is such a big problem among black people but as community can get over the hump of being pressured into a few stereotypes. From my own personal experience being a young black man growing up in many places of black being the majority such as Detroit, Chicago, New York I felt an amazing amount of comfort around these areas. Once I move down to La Vernia Texas, being enrolled into an all white school with a lot of Mexicans and the only black people could only fit on a bench in a hallway that we called “The Black Bench” in high school, I attended La Vernia school district for 7 years from 4th grade all the way to 10th grade in high school. My first encounter with this whole move, and experience this new…

To begin with, NYC has some cons I have experienced while growing up in NY. One day, I was walking down the street with my friends in Manhattan, 42nd Times Square; I felt as if people do not know how to say the word "excuse me" anymore. The people just shove you and walk right passed you without having any manners. Living in NY, in general, is expensive and everything else cost a fortune. I rely on taking the NYC Subway system (MTA) because it makes my commuting to different places much easier.…

Being in New York City itself was all too surreal, like a dream come true. Buildings raced each other in a quest to touch the soft blue sky and people littered the streets and sidewalks. Life there was upbeat and fast-paced and everyone and everything was moving, but then you crossed into Central Park. Crossing the sidewalk into the large park was like crossing the border into another world.…

The lovely skyscrapers, all the people, all the taxis, all the fashion, and all the landmarks; I am just reminiscing about the time I took a trip to the Big Apple. It was one of the best things I ever experienced. My dad took me and my sister to the wonderful city of New York for my 16th birthday. Since I wanted to fit in with New York’s fashion, I decided to wear a fluffy, white fur coat with heavy Timberlands. Before we arrived at the Big Apple, we had to go through the Atlanta airport.…
