Personal Narrative: Growing Up In Mississippi

Growing up in Mississippi as an African American young woman has given me a different perspective of life. As I reflect on my life, my childhood came with morals and values that were instilled at an early age. My mother and father had three beautiful children, two girls and one boy. We were taught to always be respectful to our elders. We were taught to say yes or no mam and sir. Respect was to be given in order to receive it. Be kind to others because you never know when you will entertain an angel. I grew up in a Christian home with a Baptist background. My father was Lead Deacon and my mother is a Minister. Working for the Lord, has always meant more than working the job God has allowed you to work. We went to church every Sunday and Wednesday. We rarely missed a service unless we were ill. Sometimes if we had minor pains, such as a headache my dad would tell us to go to church anyway we would feel better once we got there. Several spiritual lessons were taught that we now …show more content…
On Saturdays, I would spend time playing with my siblings and cousins running in fields. We would run and play in the fields. We would open watermelons and eat in the middle of the field. In our family, hard work was instilled at an early age. Although I enjoyed life playing and having fun there were times of hard work as well. My parents believed in living off the land. They also believed that you worked hard for your food. Most Saturdays we spent early mornings in the fields picking greens or beans. We had to pick greens, clean, and cook. We would work during summers to put food up for the winter. This taught us how to work for our food, clean and cook. Shelling peas was fun until your hand would hurt. My mother would tell us about her life growing up and history of working in the fields. She always taught us that nothing in life is free and that you had to work for whatever you

As a young armadillo growing up in Texas during the 1820s, my life was peaceful and happy. The Federalists who held power in Mexico left me, my fellow armadillos, and the Anglo Americans alone to enjoy and work the land. However, in 1829, the Centralists gained control of the Mexican government and the freedom we enjoyed gradually eroded. As the Mexican government imposed more regulations on the Anglo Americans, the tension which had existed between the two groups due to the Nacogdoches land grant, become even more palpable.…

Southern Writing Project It was a cool summer's evening in the small town of HanksVille, Alabama. Ma and Pa were sitting on the front porch listening to the crickets chirp. I was in the kitchen making a sandwich, while my little sister Amanda was sitting on the couch watching this show she seems to really like called "Full Metal Alchemist. " I guess it was a sad show because she got all teary eyed when a guy named Maes Hughes died and I showed his coffin. " When I asked her why she was crying when it wasn’t real, she said "watch the whole series and you'll see why.…

Writing this gives me the opportunity to tell you what it was like when I was growing up in South Dallas. I can truly say that I enjoyed it! It wasn’t like the 9th Ward in New Orleans, Louisiana, but it was enough for me to grow up in a close knit family and a community environment that became personal among several classmates, church members, and school teachers. Also, at times, living in the hood became a nightmare. Always around 12 mid-nights, you could hear gun shots blasting like police sirens.…

In my understanding, that was my command to do. Give selfish treatment to one man but give all credible treatment to the other, who in all shed the same blood fighting. I became deeply distraught by this segregated treatment because of some set value one man has to have just by the color of his skin. In disgust, I still had to do what was meant for me to do. I would work on the black soldiers and a woman named Clara Barton would work on the white soldiers. I grew interest into wanting to know how she felt about this unfair situation, however it was prohibited to step near her or inside the white soldier’s tent.…

At an early age, my family relocated from Pennsylvania to Virginia. Growing up in suburban Virginia was night and day compared to the urban area of Pennsylvania where I was born. One of the things I remember well was going to the nearby zoo as a child. As a teen, Friday night football games and going to the mall on the weekends were a must. Sundays were my favorite!…

Growing up in Maine had so many advantages from the beautiful scenery to the unique qualities Mainers have. I can't say that I'm not blessed to have grown up in such a beautifully scenic place, but I can't say it's been easy. I'm originally from land-locked Indiana. I moved to Maine when I was younger with my parents and brother and as much as I love being from a different place it's been hard growing up without a close family in a state so closely tied together with their families. Growing up in Maine, especially Mid-Coast Maine, you know that all of the surrounding families have lived there for generations, everybody knows everybody, cousins go to school together, and siblings work together.…

Growing up in the United States I always felt that I had two competing identities, not unlike numerous other Americans, due to the ethnic background of my parents. My whole family is ethnically Russian. My mother was born in the Soviet Union, whereas my father is a second generation Russian. Despite being born in Columbus Ohio, Russian was the first language I knew, and I didn't even speak English until kindergarten. Being Russian is a big part of my identity, and when I was younger I would travel to Moscow regularly to visit my grandparents and relatives.…

Religion plays an important part in the African American community. In my case it was something that was a strong part of my life and we spent a lot of time in church. We were told that a strong spiritual relationship would make me a better person. But as time went on this to me seemed a myth to me, because I saw people were not improving as people. These individuals were sick on a moral level and were lost spiritually.…

My mom was a legal secretary in Sioux Falls until she got married, then she became a housewife and took care of me and my sister. Housewives were rather common; mothers often didn’t have a job since they had so much work to do at home. She did a lot of volunteer work, but she was making no money so we lived in a one-income household. My family--and most of the people I knew--were very frugal since they grew up during the Great Depression. We were taught not to waste anything.…

In Deuteronomy, the nation of Israel is commanded to teach their children the things that they have been told. Proverbs says, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it”. In Paul’s letters to Timothy, Paul speaks of a faith that he saw in Timothy’s mother and grandmother, and Paul admires the fact that the faith has been passed down. Throughout scripture, there is an emphasis on passing down truth to a new generation, and each generation will have the same task of being a stepping stone or stumbling block for the next. Discipling can take place through several outlets; however, the most influential is undoubtedly the parents.…
