Growing up in Maine had so many advantages from the beautiful scenery to the unique qualities Mainers have. I can't say that I'm not blessed to have grown up in such a beautifully scenic place, but I can't say it's been easy. I'm originally from land-locked Indiana. I moved to Maine when I was younger with my parents and brother and as much as I love being from a different place it's been hard growing up without a close family in a state so closely tied together with their families. Growing up in Maine, especially Mid-Coast Maine, you know that all of the surrounding families have lived there for generations, everybody knows everybody, cousins go to school together, and siblings work together. Coming from a different state I didn't expect to …show more content…
I wasn't excited because I knew it was just another event for families and it was going to be packed in that gym. As I reluctantly marched in with my classmates I saw my parents and brother sitting in the seats taking pictures and smiling, while everyone else had people yelling every way to look at them I could focus on the three most important people in my life. It was then I realized how fortunate I was, I got to have a great life in a beautiful state with my family. It wasn't chaotic most of the time because there was so many of us, we could do so much more with it just being us, and through this my parents taught me that while it may be hard being on your own it's worth it. Not knowing anyone also made me a more outgoing person because I had to meet everyone and make new friends, most of my classmates already knew people because they're all related, but I got to know everyone in a different way. It has made me grow into the outgoing and adventurous person I am today. While there are many days I wish I had a big family around me I've truly been blessed to have both my parents and have the opportunity to live in such a wonderful

Florida is a land of sun palm trees and sand. Florida being a southern state with sweet tea, Publix, and Disney just a few hours away, had many perks. I had never thought of what it might be like to grow up in a northern area, or just even outside of Florida. Up until my 14th summer I had always assumed everyone lived the same way I did. It had all started when I got accepted to a summer program in Washington D.C to attend a medical forum.…

Living just outside of a city allows you to visit the city when you want but still live in a community setting. Growing up in a family oriented community was really great as it allowed me to make many friends and get to grow up with a majority of them throughout my entire public school experience. Being able to go outside on any given summer day and play with all my neighbors, gives a sense of belonging. Being in a new place allows for a lot of exploring to occur, leading you to learn new things you never would not have known unless you went away from your house. If you return to your hometown you wouldn't get to experience everything the world has to offer.…

I was in a deep sleep dreaming about my life until BOOM, my mom came in and told me to wake up. I was walking to the bathroom like a zombie to the bathroom brushing my teeth, taking a shower, and changing my clothes. We had to get to the airport as quickly as possible, because our flight leaves at five o’clock in the morning. Even though I was mad doing this I still enjoyed it because we were on our way to Florida!!This is great practice because one day I will have to do this again.…

I am a Seattle native at heart, but for the past 7 years I have been living in Sidney, MT. Many of my friends and family make fun of me for intentionally choosing to live in the middle of nowhere; but I say to them, "Hey, there's a post office, a grocery store, and the MonDak Heritage Center is pretty great." Let me tell you why I live in Montana. For starters, it's pretty unbelievable. Yeah it's flat, but have you ever looked out your window and see that beautiful painting of a sunset?…

The biggest challenge I have faced thus far was moving from North Carolina to California in the middle of freshman year. Although I was born in Downey, California and attended California schools until the age of seven, North Carolina was a big part of shaping me into the young lady I am today. My family and I moved a great amount when I was growing up so that meant attending an abundance of schools. When my family moved to North Carolina I had an extremely difficult time adjusting to this new lifestyle. I thought about all my friends and family I left…

Growing up in the United States I always felt that I had two competing identities, not unlike numerous other Americans, due to the ethnic background of my parents. My whole family is ethnically Russian. My mother was born in the Soviet Union, whereas my father is a second generation Russian. Despite being born in Columbus Ohio, Russian was the first language I knew, and I didn't even speak English until kindergarten. Being Russian is a big part of my identity, and when I was younger I would travel to Moscow regularly to visit my grandparents and relatives.…

I also had to learn a new language and get used to a new culture. Despite this, I really appreciate that my parents moved to the United States because, here, I have a lot of opportunities I would never have had in Mexico. For example, I have the opportunity to go to college in order to pursue a career instead of being a poor farmer like most of my family in Mexico. Moreover, my upbringing and culture have in a way taught me to appreciate all the things no matter how insignificant they may seem to be.…

It is about the feeling that emanates from a place as a combination of the physical environment and the surrounding community that produces a feeling of place. A place encapsulates an entire community of people and the folklore that is associated within the place. One must embrace their surroundings in order to get the full feeling of being from a place. I consider my place to be the state of Rhode Island. I grew up in that area and and connected with the people neighboring me and got in touch with my surroundings in which no other place gives me that same feeling of home.…

As a child, I never truly appreciated most of the beauty surrounding me in my home state of Maine. After growing up and moving away, I realized my comments were untrue. As a child I never truly looked.…

I hate reunions. To start with, you see/ meet people you will probably never talk to again. I get that it was nice for the older generations of my family, but for me is was just going to be ehhh. I was going to have to sit in a room with old people that I'm almost forced to say hello to, and, then what? I'm not really the type to strike up a conversation with an adult I barely knew.…
