Personal Narrative: Growing Up In Germany

Decent Essays
Growing up in Germany, and being told by boutique sales people that I didn’t have the “body type” for some of the fashions I loved and wanted, I decided to start designing and creating outfits for my sister and me. As I made dresses, skirts and jackets for the two of us, I became more and more interested in making sure our outfits, either homemade or store-bought fit us perfectly and looked fabulous.

During this time, I also completed my Bachelors degree in Women’s Custom Tailoring, as well as a one year dress making internship and a three year dress making apprenticeship.

Over the years, this interest in perfecting the fit and appearance of our wardrobes turned into the full-blown passion that I bring to the work I do for my customers

I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…

My father has been in the military for 30 years. His career has taken him and my family, to every corner of the world. The Air Force is a demanding career path to choose; often the spouse is left with the full weight of the chores to be done on the home front. During the course of my upbringing these duties were, in part, delegated to my sisters and I. While we never experienced “a life of almost tropical idleness’ (CITATION) like the children of Jane Smiley, we became effective and efficient members of our house hold. We learned to respect our house and our family.…

I grew up in a house where my imagination was nurtured to its fullest capacity. I was told, “You can do and be anything that you set your mind to.” Up until about my sixth birthday, I thought this meant that I would have a chance to be everything that I wanted to be which was a cloth designing ballerina that was also a cosmetologist. My dreams have constricted down to a more practical focus. For my research, I went to my favorite salon, Bianucci’s Salon and Spa and talked to and observed my stylist April Bianucci.…

Have you ever wondered why it is so hard for women to be big business owners but it is not the same for men? Living as a citizen of the United States I discovered that I have an overwhelming desire for children’s fashion. Being as a mother of two boys I’ve also noticed the slight struggle parents have to go through while trying to find clothes for their children. The basic facts that I have given in my general application are only the facts that have been written down and kept record of. They don’t tell you who I am as a person, nor do they tell you if I would be a good candidate for your school. Hopefully, in this personal testimony of mine, I would like to explain some of the reasons why you should consider me as a student that is right for your school. I would first like to start off saying that your school is at the top of my list, as well as many others. I know that I am a perfect candidate for FIT as I have learned many great things in high school and at the community college I attend that will benefit me on my journey as I go to transfer to a four year University of my choice.…

When I first signed up for the class, I did it on a whim. I had always wanted to study abroad at some point during my college years, and I have always been interested in mental health issues, so I decided to take this class. Even though it was a rather rash decision to go to the Netherlands, I was interested in learning about how “European socialists” and the always liberal Dutch people deal with many social issues impacting the society, and I was eager to know if their approach can be helpful in the United States, and in my home country, China. In the Netherlands, we as a class listened to lectures given by many people in, or impacted by, the mental healthcare system.…
