Personal Narrative: Growing Up In A Southern Baptist Church

Improved Essays
My life before my conversion consisted mainly of growing up in a Southern Baptist Church. Throughout my life I have heard the gospel countless times, but never accepted it as absolute truth to follow. Instead, my life until college was characterized by performing a lot of religious activity such as youth groups, church camps, and going to church on Sundays. I was in a tireless attempt to live out a religion that proved I was good enough to be declared righteous before God. It was a restless attempt to be whatever everyone else want me to be. To my parents I was a golden child who wanted to earn their approval. However, to my friends I wanted to be the cool high school athlete and did the things they did. It was a constant tug-a-war with worldly …show more content…
I got involved with a small group with two other guys, one guy being a friend and the other being a campus staff guy. Through that small group we decided that our biggest need at the moment was being trained to read God word and able to share our faith with other people. I attended a 10 week long summer project in Tampa, Florida where I learned to share my faith for the first time and was able to led 5 people to Christ. It was a joy and a passion that begin to grow in my life. I developed a heart to take the gospel back to my campus where I wanted other people to hear the same thing that I had heard, knowing they could be in the same position I was at in college. I began to lead bible studies, evangelize students on the college campus, and pray for lost family and friends. My whole goal in life shifted from earning peoples approval and gaining their acceptance to make a name for myself to become successful to knowing God, becoming more like Him, and telling others about

The site that I visited was Mercy Hill Church in Greensboro, NC. I went to a sermon, with some friends, that took place on a Sunday night. When we arrived at the church, we stayed together and observed the site. The members of this church all seemed to be within their twenties and thirties; there were a few younger children and a few older women and men, but not many. Most of these people seemed to be from Christian ethnic backgrounds or just unaffiliated with any ethnicity.…

Today’s goal was to introduce me to the site, the people that work in my department, the resources available to workers, and current projects. My volunteer supervisor, Geraldine Baptist, showed me around the hospital, specifically where I would normally sign in and sign out, the cafeteria, and the Occupational/Physical therapy outpatient department. Upon arrival at the OT/PT department, Ms. Baptist introduced me to the front desk secretary, Mauracell, a sweet, openhearted young lady. Mauracell warm welcoming made me extremely comfortable, and all anxiety was put to ease. Mauracell showed me around the office and work center, then introduced me to each person present and gave me a description of what types of things they work on.…

During my middle school years, I was an eccentric and mischievous yet sociable boy. I was the grandson of the school's custodian. My grandfather had his own apartment upstairs just in case any emergency regarding the school suddenly occurred. My friends always listened to me due to an odd reason which I knew not of. I would say I was rather influential to my peers and placed myself atop the others, sort of like a king.…

My religious community has played a profound role on my development as an adult, the three guiding principals of Zoroastrianism: "Good Thoughts, Good Deeds, and Good Words" guide my actions daily. Being part of such a small community while heightening my sense of being has also made me more appreciative and understanding of other cultures & groups. For me understanding others has become a key component in understanding myself. My community has also enabled me to be a better communicator- as often times questions are asked regarding my ethnicity and religion where I can act as a spokesperson for the…

Many people don’t know what they want to be when they “grow up”, as for my mother she didn’t know what type of religion she wanted to be in when she “grew up”. However, she did know the basics that she believed in which was God, the Holy Spirit, his son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Bible that being said she considered herself Christian and raised me as a Non-Denominational Christian. That was until my senior year of High School when my mom decided she no longer wanted to be part of the Non-Denominational Christian faith and switched over to becoming part of the LDS faith known as the Mormons and flipped my life upside-down with their different views of norms and values. Growing up Non-Denominational Christian is fairly simple faith and to me…

With the help of the teachers, and the other volunteers that were working with me, I learned how to be open to others and their opinions in small groups, and how to interact with kid that had serious problems in their life or had not accepted Christ as their personal Savior. By the end of the week, 126 kids gave their lives to Christ. In my group, I helped 5 of those kids know Jesus. I honestly can say that from this experience I feel that I have touched at least one of the kids I supervise. From getting personal with the kids in the small groups to just playing games or walking with them, I have truly connected and made a relationship with them.…

The Unitarian Universal Church that I went to was in Lexington. The building was the classic old white church with a steeple. In front of the building was a park, to the right side was the graveyard associated with the church, and in the back was parking. The church was along a semi-busy road. The building from the outside looked like a classic church with white wood with a steeple.…

Ever since I was a little girl, I remember growing up with a religious background. Growing up with this background gave me something to believe in and lean on if I ever felt alone or lost in my life. This Christian upbringing makes up a large part of my family holidays and everyday life. Every Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and meal begins with a prayer of thankfulness. In times of need or illness, prayer is the first thing that my family and I look to.…

My first church leaders’ interview was with Pastor Joe Gabbard. Pastor Joe is the Family Pastor at Cornerstone Church in Blue Springs, Missouri and has been in full-time ministry for over 14 years. I started the interview asking Pastor Joe in what ways has his work changed over the years He said “I started in student ministry and primarily focused on ministering to the students directly to students: attending school functions, active on campus, visiting and meeting one-on-one, holding youth outreaches, camps, and activities throughout the year. As I’ve developed a broader ministry theme, I’ve continued to implement outreaches and activities, but I focus more on developing a team of leaders who extend the personal touch of ministry to students.” Since he has changed the focus of his ministry, I asked him what activities or processes have you started doing or stopped doing?…

Going through my closet every day looking for something to wear, I can only find skirts and dresses. As a little girl, my mother would always dress me in a navy-blue uniform dress or skirt with tights and boots. I would tell my classmates I would dress this way because I was forced by my mother but, I only said that to cover up the real reason. I was afraid of being made fun of and I felt as though everyone made assumptions about me because I dressed differently, instead of getting to know my personality. Growing up in a religious home as a young girl, my parents instilled in me a strong basis of religion.…
