Personal Narrative: Growing Up In A Small Town

Improved Essays
Growing up in a South Texas rural town comes with many perks and as well as disadvantages. One perk is the quiet openness of living outside a major city. The city being forty-five minutes away; there are no bright lights, police sirens, or even ambulances whizzing by at all hours of the day or night. If you happened to get pulled over, the police officer would dial up your parent’s phone number leaving you a ticket and an unpleasant conversation at home. In fact, we only had the one blinking stop light in the entire town! Nothing, but just the one. What did we do for fun you ask? It was all about the football games. The town revolved around our sports teams, but not me. My life was the band. Since there wasn’t much to do in this small-town

Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

Before high school, I always thought I was an average student, but when I transitioned into high school, people started to point out that I had potential. I began to work harder than I had ever before and I began to accelerate in every course. This never took a toll on me till the tenth grade, when my mental health started degrading. Anxiety was my first foe. During the beginning of the tenth grade, I had set high expectations for myself and it began to affect my life greatly For instance, after finishing the test, I would think about just one specific question that I thought I completed wrong.…

Growing up in a family that did not communicate that much, I was not very close with my mother of father. My mom and I did tend to talk more but not about personal things in our life. Me and my dad however always fought. I have a few good memories with him (he loved teaching me how to make home made biscuits.) which I always enjoyed on those rare occasions he was in a good mood. But, 90% of the time we were fighting.…

Growing up in a working class home, I quickly gained the skills of an environmentalist, entrepreneur, and civics leader. I can still recall the smell of the flowering fruit trees of the summer months in sunny South Florid and how every year I would gather the abundance of extra fruit in our backyard and distribute them to our extended family, friends, and neighbors. In our modest home, nothing was ever thrown away, and items would be recycled many times. At the age of nine I was serving hot coffee and small pastries at the walk-up window of the small Cuban café my parents owned. As the United States prepared to celebrate its bicentennial, in the afternoons with a small booklet in hand, I drilled my mother test questions to prepare her for the…

I have lived my entire life in rural Ohio. Due to this, my experiences have not always been that of a typical member of my demographic. My house is situated with a swine building on one side and corn and soybean fields on the other, with the crop type depending on the year. The nearest town holds little options for dining or entertainment. The establishment that resembles a restaurant is just a pizza joint and in order to see a movie at a theater a thirty minute drive is required.…

Flames engulfed my blurred vision as my sobbing, curled up figure choked and convulsed. Oxygen depleted from my lungs as the smoke quickly drew in to replace it. The blazing inferno roared in my ears -- over my piercing screams -- demanding that it be heard. I could feel the intensifying heat, but I was numb to the imminent burns; I was numb to everything. The sky began to blacken, as did my perception.…

My arms were killing me. In an effort to distract myself from the pain, I began to mentally go through my favorite scenes from Harry potter, but even the thought of my favorite book couldn’t keep my mind off my discomfort for long. Huffing, I lugged the water-filler bucket uphill, careful not to spill too much of its precious contents. That would mean another trek downhill…

Growing up I thought I would have a normal childhood like every other kid, little did I know I would have to consider myself an adult at fourteen. Out of all things the most memorable time I have of my life would be the struggle I went through to get where I am today. I have a total of eight siblings, three sisters and five brothers.
