Personal Narrative: Growing Up In A Single Parent Home

Growing up in a single parent home presented its challenges, however, I have been able to overcome those obstacles and receive a bachelor’s degree from SUNY College at Buffalo. As a Jamaican W.I born young girl, the expectation for one to succeed is not high. Neither of my parents were educated or graduated from college, which made it especially difficult for my mother to provide for her children the way she desired. I am the first in my family to earn a bachelor’s degree, making me a first generation graduate. This was a motivating factor to complete my undergraduate studies and earn a bachelor’s degree. As a former volunteer, with Jericho Ministry at the Hope Refugee Center in Buffalo, NY it taught me to be selfless and focus on helping others who are less fortunate. While at the community center, I encountered many young men and women who were suffering from homelessness, psychological, emotional and social trauma. These were mostly immigrants who came to the U.S seeking refuge from war ravaged nations with language barriers and so forth. As a volunteer as this site, I had the capability to change someone’s life by finding them apartments, enrolling their children in school and helping them to obtain medical services. This experience motivated me even further because coming here from Jamaica even as a young girl was a hard transition and I can relate to these people in the daily struggles they faced. Therefore, having the ability to help and work with these individuals evoked a passion inside to want to help these people through the legal field.
