As teenagers growing up in Powder Springs, Georgia during the 1980’s, it was somewhat challenging at times to find safe and entertaining ways to occupy our time. Even though we did not have free reign to do as we chose, I would not categorize my parents as extremely strict. Relying on our parents, as if they were our personal taxi service, my sister and I struggled to find activities relatively close to home. After discovering we really enjoyed skating, we spent countless Friday and Saturday nights at the Sparkles Skating Rink in Paulding County. The indoor facility was a safe environment for teenagers, which provided my parents with a certain level of comfort to allow us to gather with friends.…

But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

In the fifth grade during spring break my family and I decided to go to Clifty Falls and walk around in the caves and on the walking trails. I had told my mom I was having trouble breathing that morning and wanted to stay home, but of course she would not let me because it was a”family event. ” We were there long enough to eat lunch and travel down a path to a waterfall and on the way back we decided to stop in one of the caves. About that time I felt my chest tightening up and knew that this was a bad idea to go into a damp cave when all I wanted to do was to go home and sleep.…

Being born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, I have been afforded the privilege of witnessing the Great Falls of Paterson my whole life. I have visited the Great Falls many times throughout my life. When I was young with my parents, whether it was for a day in the sun or for a festival. I grew up appreciating this magnificent work of nature, I also took a part in cleaning up the falls, both as a volunteer and as a member of the Paterson Youth Council and Urban Youth Corps. I have brought my family to the falls to help with the clean ups, from my sisters, to my cousins, to my youngest nephews, and those memories stick to me to this day.…

The mosquitos gave me what felt like millions of bites even though there were probably at least 50. When the mosquito attached to my arm it felt like a paint brush swiping against my arm.
