Personal Narrative: Growing Up As A Young Adult

Improved Essays
Growing up is tough. Every day people go through life with careers that they may not enjoy. Throughout the past few weeks I got the opportunity to interview two people about their jobs, one being a young adult who just started working, while the other was approaching her mid-life with an established career. The advice from both of these individuals was both eye opening and helpful. The age of the interviewee definitely influenced the responses I received. It was noticed that the older the individual was the more subdued and sincere their answers were. However, the advice of these two people will personally help and influence me for a long time. Steven Prang was the first adult interviewed. Steven, an old friend I have recently got in touch

GROWING UP Growing up, I didn’t have many luxuries, if any. The best thing I had was being a 5 minute walk away from a convenience store. The house I grew up in was infested with cockroaches and was falling apart within the walls. The dining room was so small, some of us had to eat on the floor. We only had three bedrooms, so my three younger siblings had to sleep in the living room.…

One indicator, of a teenager struggling to establish their identity, would be that the teenager begins to outwardly reject the establishment of their parents. This is usually the most notable conflict between parent and teenager as it creates a clash of ideals between the individuals. During this rejection and rebellion stage, teenagers may seek out religious practices that are different than their parents. By rejecting the preference of the parent; the teenager is not disregarding or discounting the religion of the parent, but merely searching for a religion that the individual can make their own.…

The Truth of Growing Up As a child all I wanted to do is just grow up and be an adult. As I grew older and taken on more responsibilities, I realized that growing up is not all that exciting and is actually difficult. In the final year of high school when college is the big stress, all the teachers want is to prepare us for the long papers, difficult tests and more stress. In the back of mind I’m thinking, wow this is going to be stressful, I don’t want to go to college anymore. Well my wish came true…

A motif that haunts the months of college applications and preparation is the daunting idea of seniors entering into the "real world." An alleged, new realm of reality that discredits the validity of the last few years in high school, not to mention the three before that and all the experiences previously. This concept coincides seamlessly with the idea that college is a beacon of newfound adulthood. Even so, each student's differing personality, aspirations, culture and tribulations falsifies the belief that adulthood is that straightforward. Thus, in order to define the moment that marked my transition into adulthood, I must first define what being an adult means to me.…

On a Tuesday evening two months into my junior year, I realized my life was changing. I was transitioning from child to adult in society’s eyes. I was working, driving, and taking more difficult classes to prepare for college. The more responsibilities I accepted, the more I was treated like an adult. It was not until two months later that I realized I was changing.…

Pharrell Williams once said that "If you go with fear you will fail. But if you go with faith you will be fine. You are capable of so much". This quote, along with many others written in the margins of my notebooks, exemplifies the emotional battle that is constantly occurring inside my head. I believe that not one single event truly signified the life-long transition from childhood to adulthood in my life, rather my view of the world and those around me changed drastically as I aged.…

Professional Interview Essay “Do you have any regrets about your decision to pursue this career?” This remains the one question that countless individuals ask themselves upon entering a career field. Due to the fact that I, as an adolescent, have not yet graduated high school, and I possess uncertainties regarding what career I will ultimately pursue, I conducted an interview with professionals who have thrived in their career field for more than ten years, and I addressed this question, in addition to a few others that I developed an interest in.…

Throughout my journey as a graduate student I feel as though I have spent almost more time reflecting on my life than counseling. Adulthood is a very life transforming experience, one that is nothing like I ever envisioned in my daydreams as an adolescent. When I was a child, I always assumed that becoming an adult was a rite of passage that would grant me the ability to work independently without my parent’s harsh and strict supervision, like staying late into the night playing video games with friends or watching whole seasons of shows in a few nights. Unfortunately, this idealization was only a partial truth, as I forgot to consider the baggage that is associated with adulthood that I only realized after my first taste in adulthood. My first real experience with adulthood came in a volunteer experience at the age of 16 in the Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital…
