Personal Narrative: Growing Up As A Child

Growing up as a child was challenging for me. I was born in Kenya, but raised in America. At the age of six I moved to Chicago. My parents knew that wasn’t a place to raise children so they moved us to Fargo, North Dakota. I was then enrolled in second grade and placed in ELL or English language learners. My teacher Mrs. Riley was one of the most influential person in my life. She took me under her wing and guided me through elementary school. She saw that I was a hard worker and had me tested to take mainstream classes just like the rest of my friends. It has been difficult to make friends since, especially of those who happened to be a different color than me. The lack of communication with my classmates, motivated me to ask Mrs. Riley for more books to take home, that way I can catch up with everyone else.

The food, music and the dress code were all a puzzle to me. Being a picky eater had me sworn off on trying new foods, and the load, explicit music made everything even more confusing. Being dressed from head to toe was not common, when it came to my peers who wore shorts and V-neck t-shirts everywhere. In third grade I abandoned the scarf and the skirt for shirts and sweats. All this just to fit in because I couldn't take one more day of all the teasing for being different. The second person who influenced me the most in my family is my dad. He always pushed me to reach for the stars. He always said that Education will always get you places, not ignorance. He provided me with the support to take rigorous courses and to stay being goal oriented. He told me that only I can dictate how I live my life and what it is that I want to accomplish and pursue. My father is one of a kind man, and one with a heart as big as the open skies. His words molded me into the person I am today, one with confidence and very ambitious. A

Growing up is tough. Every day people go through life with careers that they may not enjoy. Throughout the past few weeks I got the opportunity to interview two people about their jobs, one being a young adult who just started working, while the other was approaching her mid-life with an established career. The advice from both of these individuals was both eye opening and helpful. The age of the interviewee definitely influenced the responses I received.…

The Luxury of Childhood It was a bright and sunny Monday morning; a sermon was playing on the car radio though we were not paying so much attention because we were lost in our thoughts. My uncle was driving to work and was going to drop me and my four-year-old cousin, who was sitting in her car seat with a bowl of fruit loops in her laps, in school. This Monday morning, like every other morning, I was reflecting on my day and week, checking in my head for assignments and readings to make sure I had not left anything out.…

Often times, making a difficult decision can mark the transition from childhood to adulthood. In my personal experience, a tough decision in dance would mark the aforementioned statement to be true. I began dancing at the age of ten, and shortly after, dance became my life. The difference I was born on the evening of August 9th in a small Colorado hospital. My Father, Thurman, still says I was the best birthday gift he ever received. When I was born, the doctor like all good doctors seemed to do, he held me a little higher to give a more dramatic atmosphere in the room and said “It’s a boy”. No, I wasn’t, as my mom pointed out I was a beautiful baby girl, but that sentiment, I was a boy has always seemed to hold true to my dad. Growing up my dad was stern but kind, he never treated me as though there was a limit of what I could do as a girl.…

The transition from childhood to adulthood is essentially a gradual process. There are several aspects of life, which take a long time to cultivate in an individual. Words like responsibility and planning can, in a short span of time, acquire overarching presence in life, and the world may no longer look as carefree and simple, as it once did. An air accident couple of years back was one such turning points in my life.…
