Personal Narrative: Gravity Is Real

Gravity Is Real
Think of an all-star athlete. It could be anyone like Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, or Clay Matthews. They are all a decent height and very fit. Now imagine me, an average height girl with a decently fit body. A random person in a grocery store would think I am athletic, right before they see me slip on the smooth tile floor. I could knock down all competition in a clumsy contest, literally. I am 5’6 and broke my arm trying to jump over a 2’ tall traffic hurdle.
At the end of October I took my volunteer group, Agents of Change, to the Reggie’s Sleepout. We spent all week raising money for Iowa’s homeless youth and planning how we would build our cardboard house. Once we got there, it didn't go as planned. I had taken the

I went to Zombie Burger and ate the greasiest and most cheese filled burger. I felt pure bliss as we walked back to our camp. It was the same way I imagine daredevils feel before they jump out of an airplane, invincible. My friends started running around and pretending to jump over things. I just watched and cheered them on as they joked around. By the time we reached our camp, I felt the adrenaline and decided to get wild. I eyed the traffic hurdle and ran. My body warmed up but the air was still cool against my face. My surroundings blurred as I rushed to the hurdle. With everything I had in me, I jumped like a professional basketball player. Before I knew it, I was on the ground waiting for someone to explain to me what went wrong. I wanted someone to tell me that a miniature tornado got in the way or the hurdle suddenly grew three more feet. Instead, my friends helped me up while laughing hysterically. My boot just slightly hit the top of the hurdle. I probably would’ve been ashamed but even I have to laugh at myself sometimes. I thought I was fine at first but 3 hours later I found out that I broke my elbow. Thanks gravity for always being there.

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

The ‘Coalition to End Homelessness’ or commonly known as “The Yellow House” is a non-profit organization, and place for people in Fort Lauderdale who are homeless to come and seek shelter (mostly) during the day. With the city’s broken relationship with the homeless population and under the supervision and leadership of Laura Hansen, CEO of the Coalition to End Homelessness, clients who come to the yellow house have access to a computer lab, food, and clothing, services to help file and organize important documents on their behalf, guidance, and other social services. I found this volunteer opportunity with this organization through ‘Hands on Broward’, and spent a few hours doing whatever tasks Ms. Hansen has assigned for me. In my experience,…

I have coordinated with many community directors from organizing alternative breaks for undergraduate students with the BeyondBama program in the Center for Service and Leadership. While planning for my first alternative break trip in Guin, AL, I worked closely with the Northwest Alabama Habitat for Humanity director, Teressa Clark, who everyone soon called Mama T. Mama T welcomed everyone on the trip with open arms and provided a sense of warmth and comfort into the community of Guin. In addition to cutting, cleaning, and revitalizing a Habitat home, it was important for Teressa that the students and I know the people and community of Guin. Therefore, we had dinners hosted by community members, cheered at their local high school football game, and volunteered at their library’s annual fundraiser.…

My fieldwork involved learning the ways of the homeless population. During the week of March 21st 2016 a group of about 3 others, and myself walked down to the Marion Soup Kitchen dressed in run down cloths, and a somber faces. My goal was to truly be able to immerse myself in the culture of the homeless population, and learn their struggles unfiltered by an outsider’s perspective. My journey was nerve racking, depressing, and eye opening to say the least, but I wouldn’t trade it because of all the things I learned, and people I met. The saying, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” holds truth beyond words.…

Madeleine Hatoun, a senior graduating from Essex High School, and its Academy of Visual and Performing Arts completed this project as community outreach requirement. She was influenced by Gregor Kloehn, an artist from Oakland, California, who built tiny homes out of recycled materials for homeless people. Hatoun was also inspired by how homelessness can affect anyone, including children. She built small houses to raise people’s consciousness about homelessness.…

Page forty-two, my mind etches in the details of the page as Michael walks through the door. The anger, the irritation, the tension; it smacks me out of my book and joins my newly formed memory of that page, page forty-two. Something has happened here, but neither of us speaks, neither of us even looks at the other. Gravity seems to increase on my arms that hold the book I’m reading with clenched teeth and hands, as I feel the heat of his presence walking by. I keep my eyes glued to the paper and let the words dance across my eyes, perhaps more frantically than normal, and keep my profile as low as possible.…
