My Family immigrated to the United States when I was just two years old. Growing up in an unknown place surrounded by a foreign language was difficult to say the least, if not for me then for my hardworking parents. This may have not been the most convenient of circumstances being raised in total isolation with no family, but it transformed me into the woman I am today. From this I have been able to appreciate my surroundings more, knowing the things people take for granted in the United States are privileges in other countries. Drivers complain about potholes in the roads, where i think of them as lucky to even have roads.…

The thing about running is that you hate it until it’s over, at least for me that’s true. Personally, I like running, and it gives me a chance to get out and work towards something. All throughout high school, I’ve run track, and for two years I ran cross-country, both are great sports. The two years I ran cross-country made me wish I ran all four years. If you’re part of more than one sport, it’s natural to choose a favorite.…

It was in the late 1980’s that the first of my family immigrated to America. Like most immigrants, they came to this country in search of a better life than the one they left behind. I admire my parents for having the courage to come to this country and start over from zero. For most of their lives, my parents worked in the fields picking fruit. It is a physically demanding job that pays very little.…

It was 25 years ago I first time designed a furniture set for a 100 ft2 bedroom. I draw floor plans for the room, furniture draft for workers, which includes storage bed, night stand, closet, desk and a chest with 5 drawers by hand. I still remember the stunned faces while my friends first time visit my home in China, 15 years ago, by seeing my open kitchen, glass wall separator and crimson couches in front a green wall. 7 years ago, I immigrated to Canada. I was more than happy to live in a house, which meant I had more space to design, to decorate.…

There is a show that I love, but usually wouldn’t watch just to watch but when I do watch it reminds me of a very special person, my mother. “David, why are you hanging out with the CBCs?” A tough looking Chinese student asked me, furiously. CBC stands for Canadian-born Chinese, a term describing an Asian community that somewhat resists their Chinese identity. On the other hand, the angry Chinese student belonged to the community named “Fobs”- fresh off boat. Fortunately yet, unfortunately, I was the being that was in between of the two groups.…

One of the many problems I had with this move was the scenery; pretty interesting throughout the drive until we entered the state of California. I felt that horrible sick feeling while thinking, “Who in the hell would want to live in this place!” I hated the scenery of the desert and the homes; so close together, the deficiency of space and trees; that was a bomb exploding. This ripped through the shreds of my soul that were becoming loosely stitched. My father had taken a detour towards the beach; we were merely permitted to stand and observe; I honestly can say, no excitement existed with this scenery.…

My family’s migration story goes back to when my father was born in the sovereign state of Guanajuato in Mexico. He migrated to this country in 1983 at the young age of eighteen facing many challenges along the way such as racism and the fact that he had nothing to his name. His journey was long and difficult as he traveled alongside his cousin and a coyote leading the way. Although my father did not enter the country in a way that is considered “legal” he felt he needed to in order to attempt to achieve a better life. A refugee I met a few years ago. Syria―Anti-rebel protests calling for the president's’ removal had started to escalate; weapons were raised, protesters were incarcerated on the spot, chlorine gas bombs were thrown left and right, houses were destroyed, and the atrocious Syrian army began to show its teeth. “None of us imagined the situation would escalate and become more complicated or even an actual war would start. ”Ola, 18, said. Only 13 at the time, Ola Alqadaisee, packed her bags with fright and despair, gazing at every object she had left in her room with woe in her eyes, saying farewell to her childhood memories as she left her home with just a handbag holding a change of clothes.…
