Personal Narrative: Going To Hawaii

Improved Essays
Going to Hawaii What is a “vacation”? Vacation is defined as an extended period of recreation. Many people go on vacation for various different reasons. Holidays, special occasions, and birthdays come to mind when someone mentions a vacation. For me, a vacation would mean a chance to get away from life’s daily responsibilities for a few days. I could really use a break from school, chores/errands, motherhood; and one I know a little too well is stress. I want a chance to relax and unwind, enjoy the scenery, refocus, and recuperate. My ideal vacation would be to leave all my cares and worries behind and fly to the picturesque country of Hawaii.
My trip would begin with my husband coming home, bursting into my room like someone’s behind him with a chainsaw, waving plane tickets and yelling “Honey grab your things because we’re going to Hawaii”. Before he could say when we were going I’d already made mental notes of who would watch the kids and our family dog King. I didn’t need much time to figure out what to wear or if I needed to pack light or heavy. My mind racing, with ideas of how much fun this is going to be, I jumped up off of the bed and begin packing my luggage as well as the kids’.

Once I could see volcanoes in the distance I knew my endeavor of a memorable vacation was about to take place. A place where many only dream of going. Immediately, I began to feel querulous and eager. My palms were sweaty and my stomach was in knots. We stepped out of the plane and the very first thing I noticed was the beautiful scenery and how much it complimented the 73° weather. Immense palm trees lined the streets like Christmas in July. Some bared colorful flowers just beneath the branches while others overflowed with fruits like mangos, papayas, and pineapples. I was overwhelmed, the scenery was

Hawaii, the home of white sand beaches, pro surfing, hula dances, and warm weather. If I could move to any region within the United States, I would move to Hawaii with no hesitation. Hawaii contains a prestigious hospital and the opportunity to become a surfer. Both of which of which I have always dreamed of being a part in. Nothing would make me happier than becoming an orthopedic surgeon operating out of a Hawaiian hospital working on shark attack victims and other unlucky victims who need orthopedic repair, then go straight to the beach to surf and relax for the remainder of the day.…

Two thousand five hundred eighty-seven. I could take an eight-hour flight or a casual thirty-seven-hour drive, but no matter what, I am still two thousand five hundred eighty-seven miles away from my home in New Haven, Connecticut. Being a college freshman, trying to juggle class, homework, projects, studying, sleeping, eating, and athletics; finding the travel time to go home is an almost impossible task. Add in the cost of the $600 flights round trip and there is no chance a student can go visit home when they feel a little homesick. I on the other hand had never even fathomed being homesick from the frozen tundra I called home.…

A metaphor to thoroughly interpret my own cultural identity would be the coconut delicacy known as Haupia. Not only for its elegant perplexion, but for the soft clouded stature that belongs to this alien creature, which taste is only permitted to the fortunate few occupying the native islands of Hawaii. Another perplex root in the tree of my culture is Lei-making. The breathtaking row of an aligned set of flowers to form the Lei is one of the prime connections to the base of the hawaiian culture by contributing to the ancient craft itself. A more well-known phenomenon that had one of its origins among the islands of Hawaii and is still dwelled upon to this day is surfing.…

My parents were taking myself, along with my younger sister and brother, around the globe because they felt a calling from God to be missionaries. All of our possessions were sold off, including my much beloved toys, until everything we had could fit into eight large suitcases.
