Personal Narrative: Going Into My First Year Of College

Improved Essays
Going into my first year of college I had plans of being healthy. My older siblings were for sure I would get the freshman 15 just as they did when they were in college. Many freshman give in to their temptations the first year because they don’t have their parents with them to judge them. Why did I decide to live healthier? I wanted to avoid the freshman 15 and to avoid I had changed my eating habits, become more active, and wanted to become healthy mentally as well. My choice to pay close attention to what I ate was refreshing. When playing football in high school I watched what I ate most of the time, but not all the time. Then when I quit football I didn’t focus on what I was eating. If it was food I enjoyed I would eat till I was satisfied.

Without the different logs that dealt with subjects such as exercise, healthy traits, and communication, I would not have noticed several aspects of my life which I never think about. Some examples would be the unhealthy habits that I’ve picked up and thinking about ways in which to exchange those habits for healthier ones and also finding coping strategies that are most effective for me when I am anxious or stressed about something in my life. With gym class seeming pointless to many it leads many to want to skip it entirely. (cite) Which my schools and many others offer to students who are part of two school sport teams. These influenced students to think physical education was more for getting people to do physical activity and doesn’t show the why and how to build healthy fitness habits. Many students on the sports teams in school didn’t want to play games in class seeing how student participation wasn’t always guaranteed. This would be because my teacher wouldn’t motivate us to try our best and wouldn’t help us with our mistakes.…

Activity 1 Five strategies for mindfulness of food and eating that would be workable for me to practice in college are: Taking small bites and chewing well Putting my fork down between each bite Thinking about why I’m eating a portion of food Setting a timer for twenty minutes to eat a meal Sitting at a table I chose these strategies because I feel like they are doable. I can take a few extra seconds to chew my food, instead of wolfing it down. Putting my fork down between each bite also seems easy enough. I think that I really should start thinking about why I’m eating food.…

Everyone has time to be healthy Freshman 15 is an expression used to describe an arbitrary amount of weight students put on in their first year of post secondary studies, usually due to unhealthy eating and poor exercise habits. Students say they struggle finding a balance between work, leisure, and maintaining healthy habits, leading to a lack of exercise, and poor nutrition. These complaints are clearly caused by a lack of intrinsic motivation and a growing status quo of complacency, rather than actual time constraints. Despite the vast number of home workouts that one can complete in under ten minutes, students will still excuse themselves from any form of physical activity, in favour of inactive alternatives. The problem is further pushed…
