Personal Narrative: God's Pantry

It’s the first day of spring break, and I got up at 5:30. My parents asked me if I really wanted to go, and I said yes. Today is supposed to be our drive to San Francisco for vaca, but I decided to wake up early and volunteer at a food bank for a few hours and then go with my family. The food bank is called “God’s Pantry”, which is an organization created to spread the belief of Christianity through passing out food for people in need. It was about a 25 minutes drive there when I stepped out of the car, there was a long line of people that were silhouetted by the rising sun and shaped under harsh wind of winter. Some lolling next to the fence, others closing their eyes for a nap, and to my surprise, there are people who brought blankets with them to keep themselves warm. Those are the ones who decided to get up before the sun and drive miles to get in a line. The reason lays as I jostled to the front of the crowds. From milk to fruits, vegetables to muffins, bread to meat, the breadth of food items is the greatest supermarket I’ve ever seen. It’s like an outdoor Costco, with large amounts of each item; or maybe an expanded Stater Brothers, with expensive purchases; it’s also as farmers’ markets, with fresh and qualitative products. As my shift turned to the center of the quad, there are coffees, hot chocolates, cookies, cakes, etc. ready for a buffet serve. It’s totally free and designed for the people waiting in line. I smiled too, holding my chocolate bars tight. It is the reason that had driven them to come to this place, and it is also to me. Every Time I would get something I love but would never buy home. God’s food is abundant I suppose, everyone who went to that food bank experienced it. More than three hundred of people happily drove home with there car full, I jumped into my dad’s car. I know I’ll come back next time, it’s worth

To experience a local aspect of Hispanic culture I visited the Tienda Mexicana La Guadalupana, a grocery store in Chapel Hill. Once inside, the term that came to mind when looking around was bodega. The store was small, but made clear use of its space, with items on the walls, shelves, and even the ceiling. This is in contrast to most “American”, or english speaking, grocery stores I have been to, as they are often wide and spacious, with plenty or room to showcase products. They commonly have bright lights; light, colorful walls; ads and signs everywhere with directions and promotional deals; and music playing over loudspeakers.…

In today’s society, people are swept up in the wrath of being too prideful, or become greedy. These deadly sins deaden our religious life, causing us to distance ourselves from God’s path. Everyone must dig deep into their spiritual lives, and lend a helping hand to those who need it the most. Whether it’s simply having a conversation with a homeless person, donating money, or volunteering at a daycare for the destitute children, these charitable acts can make a huge difference in someone’s life. My service learning experience was an eye opener for me, and it made me realize how privileged and blessed I truly am.…

There are many stories told in my family. Anyone and everyone told them, some nights it would be my mom and other nights it would be my grandpa. There would always be two stories read; the first one would be from a book called “My Book of Bible Stories”. This book has so many pictures asks questions has descriptive words and is still one of my favorite books. After that story whoever was telling the story would make up a silly story usually about a blue or green man with a giraffe that went traveling and exploring (I have no clue why).…

Doing charities works is something that I have always wanted but I never have a chance to do it because I don’t either have the time nor knowing where to begin. Taking Business Ethic class requires me to do the volunteer works so I did it for the sake of credits and to pass this class. In the back of my mind, I didn’t really understand why doing the volunteer work was relevant or would be practical use in a real life of the business ethnic decisions.…

My religious community has played a profound role on my development as an adult, the three guiding principals of Zoroastrianism: "Good Thoughts, Good Deeds, and Good Words" guide my actions daily. For me understanding others has become a key component in understanding myself. The Army behind The Army Although I have never been in the position of needing others’ help, I have seen fellow classmates be there. The Salvation Army started off as a small evangelistic group trying to get relief to others in multiple areas, but it has now become a household name. Some people rely on this special group to get by, while others rely on them during certain times of the year like Christmas and Thanksgiving. People throughout our local area are to account for the help to be able to make this organization do what it needs to for the community. From feeding the homeless and clothing men, women, and children, to helping find shelters and jobs, the Salvation Army has proven to be a national relief center for communities around the world.…

We began as I believe all days should begin; in the presence of the Lord. After a talk and prayer, we headed off; some of us on busses and some in cars. I had picked to go to the Food Pantry the Tuesday before, although I did not foresee any of the events that would happen there at that time. I had thought it’d be some gigantic warehouse with food stacked on shelves and we would have to move it out of there to an even more gigantic warehouse. This was not the case.…

On August 26, 2005, I gave my life to Christ, and it was the start of a whole new chapter of my journey. I still remember that night vividly in my head. The feelings of excitement, joy, and love were very tangible in my heart. My mom and dad were both sitting beside me on my bed while I was told the importance of this decision and how my life would never be the same. Even at 5 years old, I was aware of my decision to follow Jesus and accept him into my heart.…
