Personal Narrative: Go Into The Woods

“’Go into the woods,’ they said; ‘Find yourself,’ they said,” Elena grumbled to herself.

“Not like there is anyone around to hear me, save a godforsaken bird or lizard.”

Elena found herself deep in the Appalachian Mountains on a portion of the Appalachian Trail, secluded far from the talons of society. Originally from Chicago, where skyscrapers define the landscape, these mountains were not her home. Nonetheless, she was hell-bent on conquering this trail. An all-too-demanding first job after college was draining her rapidly, and this had been the suggestion from family and friends alike. In the woods there is no Wi-Fi, no cell phone reception, no email bleating at every hour. That was a hefty enough selling point for Elena; she trained with a professional hiker and did her homework on the

Already her second week on the trail, she was becoming increasingly more adept at throwing her tent up and building a fire to keep warm, cook dinner, and keep the pesky forest animals away. Dog-tired and covered in sweat and filth, once her camp was finished Elena backtracked to a small stream she crossed over a few minutes back. She began methodically scrubbing her face and choice body parts with a washcloth dipped repeatedly in the stream. Though she longed to sit under a steaming hot shower and relax her aching muscles, her campfire would have to do.

Elena sat by the campfire until the rustlings in the bushes around her became too unnerving. The past nights had been filled with conversation and singing with other hikers, which hid the sounds of whatever may be lurking outside the ring of light from the fire. Tonight, alone with the sounds and the darkness, Elena was on edge. The crunching around her didn’t sound like squirrels, that much she knew. She retreated to her tent and sleeping bag with her mace gripped tightly next to her.

Treason's lungs burned, as if every breath sucked in fire. It had been a simple task-- a diplomatic mission to Frigid Plague. She had left a week ago, intent on strengthening their ties with the recent uprise of so many new packs in the valley. With the moon full and ripe in the night sky, she had more than enough light to guide her on her trek through the valley, and yet this sense of security had been a lie. It had been six minutes since she first caught the first, overpowering stench of bear.…

The author reflects, “When I began my journey, I thought about what the end would be like. As I got closer to Mt Katahdin, Maine, it was all I could dream about, think about, imagine about.” The end sight was just an old weathered wooden sign, but the journey a gamut of emotions, of completion, of success. I’m finished making the memories from the best time of my life.” “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life...”--Henry…

The Hunted I didn’t know who I was. I woke up next to a bunch of muddy kids. They all smelled like they haven't showered in weeks. There was two twins, a chubby kid, and probably the skinniest kid I’ve ever seen. Then I realized I smelled just like them.…

As morning came the sunlight abatjoured through the dark dim lit canyons, of Gunnison National Park, Colorado . I slowly crept out of my sleeping bag, every muscle sore from yesterday's hike. I thought to myself how lucky I am to be backpacking through the National Parks, with four other girls. There’s a little slice of Heaven in Marshall, Texas, where the sun shines through the pines and the sound of cicadas serenade you throughout your afternoon and the lake shines like a plate of polished silver in the early morning sun. When I first came to Camp Fern, I was on my own. Everyone else had known each other for at least two years, so I was the odd one out. In my cabin there was the usual sort. There was the popular one, the attention seeker, the joker, and the one you love to hate.…

It was as if the world was reborn, the ashes were nowhere to be seen, and no fires nor smoke in the air or in sight. The idea of making a long trail through the Green Mountains came about in 1910. It was not until 1930, a time characterized by woodland revival, that trail would finally reach completion. The creation of the Long Trail “made the resurgent forest into a refuge for people living through a period dominated by enormous social change” (Albers 260). This bit of information is, essentially, the extent of Albers’ description of the Long Trail.…

Ever since my first backpacking trip 6 years ago, I’ve had an affinity for the Appalachian Trail. I’m constantly looking for excuses to mash our lives into the giant, 50 liter bags, and hit the trail for a few days. This past year, in early fall, I convinced my parents to don their sturdy boots and disappear into the wilds of bear state park with me for three days. We were dropped off at the top of Bear Mountain and, while my parents argued over directions, I wandered around the windswept ridge.…

When I was very little, walking up the trail with a pack on my back and the dog at my side, I would reach out and pull leaves from the bushes and trees. I would tear off corners, smooth the edges, and they would be turned into spaceships, flying across a lush alien world. Sometimes the trail, worn down into the ground over time by paws and hooves, would climb its way up onto the crests of ridges and meander across the moist, mossy fringes of muskegs. The rough, black and gnarled spruce branches that grew there were pirate spacecraft, pursued by the sleek birch branches from beyond the muskeg's soggy borders. As imaginary lasers and rockets exploded against the ships' hulls, I would rip off little pieces of bark and let them fall to the forest floor.…
